Tommasini ? About that dent...

Found a Tommy close by and looking for price opinions. Super Prestige, frame good to fair with some scrapes and small dent in top tube near seat. SPX frame set. Campy record group, seat post, hubs, pedals, gearing and more. Owner wants to keep seat and bars. Final negotiations at 600.

Update:
Photos of small dent in top tube

It is a tough decision - but after looking up the included parts on Ebay Sold section I find the parts alone are worth 600 or more.
Included:
Campagnolo Record:
- crankset
- pedals
- shifters
- brake calipers
- R Derailleur
- F. Derailleur
- headset
- hubset w- skewers
- brake levers (pictured, but separate photo)
3T stem
Roto 27.0 seatpost
Mavic MA40 rims (clinchers)

I would pass at that price. Frame is damaged, paint impossible to match, needs tires, full service, cables, bars, seat, brake levers, chain.

Would tend to agree that $600 is a lot for a project bike with a dented tube. Even with the parts included you looking at $200-300 plus labor to complete the build right and then you still have bike with some issues. If your going to put this much money and time into a build I would say your really want to start with a bike that doesn't have issues.

Whatever sells on Ebay subtract fees which is about 15 %
Ebay is 10 %
PayPal 4 or 5 %

Then time selling, shipping, going to shipping stores.

I sell and buy on Ebay which is great for both.

If YOU love the bike and want it, then you should buy it.

But as others have said, which I myself agree with,
$600 is too much.

Tough to really see in pics about the conditicon.

Good Luck 🚲🚲🚲🚲

Any pics of the dent? Pics of the chrome?

I agree these are nice beautiful bikes but if the paint and chrome is in tough shape it isn’t worth the money. Plus as noted it is a project and will cost you time, effort and parts to overhaul it and get on the road.

but it is SPX…..

Yes it is a bit much and I really should travel to see this bike in person before making a decision. As for the build, that is my hobby and most work is done by me. I like to get dusty, crusty old bikes and restore them. Of course I always end up putting much more money into the bike than it's worth (see my chrome Schwinn Voyager build here - Restoring a Schwinn Voyageur 11.8 - from crud to new | Project Rides | The Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange (thecabe.com)

If anyone knows of a better deal than this I would be interested.

Well if your up for all the work with the bikes paint scheme if the dent isn't big enough to hurt the mechanics soundness of the frame it would be fairly easy to touch up the paint so it doesn't show and the chrome looks to just need a good clean and polish. Based on the nice Voyager you seem to be very skilled at this kind of stuff so the bike may not be that bad of deal for you but would be for most buyers.

Thanks, I am a bit of a perfection freak and now realize I have to see this bike in person (one and a half hours from me). to really check out the chrome. If the chrome is bad then no go, I can mess with paint and polish alloy or steel but not badly pitted or corroded chrome.
If all is cool it will be a fun winter project

It can be tough buying long distance. That is one of the nice things about the forums you can often find someone close to checkout and bike and maybe help pack n ship it.

That does not look to bad, just not $600 good time. Sounds like you already got the final offer for the day. I would walk, next week or two if it's still there throw your last offering and see if that can get ball rolling.

I try to think about your deal, as how much is the frame in great condition worth? Then I would compare your sellers deal as it is. Your deal with the parts should be pretty close in value or less than a frame in great shape.

If thats an $900 frame in great condition then the $600 deal may be pretty good. It does looks better than I thought it would.

The dent doesn't look that bad. I would be more concerned about whatever it is just above the dent on the right side look like it might be a small puncture hole with rust.

For that level of bike, and if one were contemplating some sort of Dream Machine restification project, -- a dent that could be filled with brass might not be a deal killer at all if a high level re-paint was in the cards anyway

Not sure what a nicely appointed bike like this would sell for in beautiful shape --- $1500- $1800 possibly?

Just checked with owner and it is a nick, not a hole.

Well that's OK there close enough together that one could lightly sand down a bit and just need to deal with the issues on that section of frame very likely the same incident caused both. It's good to ask for extra pics often time the pic of on flaw reveals a bigger one.

It should be a lovely ride for you. That dent is only a value issue, non-structural so a roll and body filler plus a basic one color paint job and decals here could be done for less than $500. If the components, chrome and wheels are spiffy you might end up with a nice bike at a reasonable cost.

You plan to race it or show and roll it ?
I would tune/clean up and enjoy some nice rolls.
Love riding my racing model as a nice and fast roller

I recently bought a Tommasini Super Prestige, and its a fantastic ride, its in The obligatory red splatter paint scheme so not a favorite of mine, i was lucky and got a good deal i was so surprised how much i love it.. if the bike your looking at has the original Air fork, those are worth around $250 on their own, believe or not they sold the frame with or without the proprietary fork, as the fork was quite expensive on its own, $400 i think, certainly the rest of the story plays a part of the price, quality of the rims, the components as well, i have read that these are top notch quality, now iv'e had one i wouldn't hesitate if another one came up in a color i really wanted to pay up for it.

This frame has been listed for about a year now

Surely within that time someone has seen it in person and decided not to buy it

That dent looks pretty bad

Keep looking
