Della Santa on eBay - Only $40K

No, I am not making this up. You can have a never ridden, never even been outside, Della Santa for the low, low price of $40,001. Well , to be fair, it does have a "make an offer" option . . . .

The topper? It was "built for and exhibited only at N@MBL@." (The auto-censor won't let me use the actual acronym - not without reason - hence the "@'s" in place of the actual letter.) I wonder if the powers that be in San Jose, Sacramento, Austin and Hartford, among others, knew who was setting up shop in their convention centers.

Again, I am not making this up. I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or alert the authorities. This listing reminds me of the old adage regarding the difference between fiction and non-fiction: fiction has to make sense.

In case it matters, it's a 58cm. Okay, you're right; it doesn't matter.

If he really wanted 40k, he should have priced it at $39,999.99. Basic retail.

Yes, the whole (lengthy) listing is an interesting . . . yeah, that's the word, interesting . . . read. Be warned though, it's kind of a rabbit hole of the "Alice in Wonderland" variety.

The same seller also has a derny up for sale. Only ten grand, again with a "make an offer" option. He says Peter Rich (a Bay Area legend and the promoter of the original Tour of California in 1971) bought it and that it was used at the Hellyer Park velodrome in San Jose BITD.

Okay, he's asking $50,001.00 for both the Della Santa and the derny, both with "make an offer" options. I bet the seller would take $49,995.00 for both. But offer $49,990.00 first and be prepared to go up.

It’s a beautiful bike but I’m not sure any bike is $40k worth of pretty.

His underlying ped theme is more than a little off-putting. If he's trying to be funny, I'm not getting the "joke".

Nice bike, no toe straps for the ask?

there are a lot of interesting bikes at wild prices right now, vintage bikes are not like cars though.

review the gavel or even near auction prices on bringatrailer to make you wish you too parked your Integra Type R at 7,000 miles...

Straps are NIP on the floor, he would probably install them for another $1K.

Maybe if it had been ridden by Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Mohammed, the Buddha, and Moses. But it would have to come with one hell of a Certificate of Authenticity.

Time to comment on pix.

I'll start.

Seat post is way behind the limit line.

Lookit the pix, they're still in the bag.
Which means this clown doesn't know how to install them properly.
But then, he also doesn't know that Hellyer Park doesn't allow derailleur, nor braked bikes on the track.

The big problem with this bike is that its value is tied to the fact that it has "never seen daylight". As soon as you take it out the door it will lose 90% of its value. I mean, I guess you could ride it at night....

My takeaway from that listing is I now need to log which tools I use when reconditioning a bike. Pretty clear Husky ain’t gonna cut it.

WOW! A Virgin Dell Santa!

I lived in San Jose near Campbell when I first moved to the Bay Area in June,1980. One night after work I took my Colnago Super out for an exploratory ride and ended up at Hellyer Park. They'd just finished racing on the Velodrome and everyone was clearing out. I sweet talked someone into letting take a few laps around the track. Diving off the high bank doesn't look that steep but it was quite a thrill!

Someone mentioned Peter Rich and a derny... Here's a shot from the Hellyer Velodrome website of some riders using a "hawg" as a derny. Maybe it was a modified Harley?

Getting back on topic, wonder what I could get for my 2001 Della Santa. I got the NOS frame from a local shop in 2019 where it had been hanging on display for all those years. It's only been ridden a few times???

Here's another untarnished bike, a 1991 Lemond Team Z bike that's truly never been ridden. Unfortunately it's a Billato frame not a Della Santa....

Back in the days of yore, someone listed an unused wedding dress on the Bay for a ginormous amount. The seller went into great detail as to how happy he was to have been left standing at the alter. The folks in the rec.bicycles.tech newsgroup had a field day with that one, bidding it up $0.01 cent at a time. It went on for about a week before eBay pulled it!

Maybe we can do the same with penny best offer bids on this one?

BTW for those who don't know, N@MBL@ stands for North American Man Boy Love Association... a pedophile group!

Wonder if the seller meant NAHBS North American Handmade Bicycle Show?

I hate to be the one that says this, but I'm sure the set post was installed as he intended it to keep the bad jokes going. "Just the tip" of the seat post is inserted.
