Agree. And with most slurs, it really depends on context and intent to know if they are offensive. There are a few words, like the C word and the N word, that I actually think are ok to filter out.

You know how kids sit in a group cross-legged?? When I grew up, we all said it was "Indian Style," but apparently that is now offensive and it's "Criss Cross Apple Sauce," at least that is what my Gen Z kids tell me. Similar to the name concerns of certain professional football and baseball teams.

People in San Diego and surrounding areas refer to their city as Dago. In that context it’s not a slur. Just like people in New Orleans refer to their city as “Nawlins.”

If it’s offensive let me know, but nobody’s ever told me it is, including the family members who live there.

I do find it fascinating that the Buffalo Bills, as in "kill kill kill till there's no more Indians left to be killed" haven't faced a peep.

We switched from (horribly) caring about nationality to (horribly) caring only about skin color (or mostly). Lovecraft was horrified to find he had Welsh in him. Nowadays it's just "white". I had to explain to AG about the racist old man in Community being racist against Finns.

Objection to the Chiefs and the Braves is pretty direct and obvious. Buffalo Bills? *shrug* I've never even thought about it. Assuming they're named after Cody, then what? I'm not aware of any damning politics and I'm sure that the vast majority of the public are in the same boat. Hard to connect the dots if you don't know that the dots are there.

Similar situation with a lake that's in my neighborhood - it had been Lake Calhoun for as long as anyone alive could remember and no one really knew the origin of the name. A few years ago, the origin was brought to light - not only was it named after a guy that was a vile asshat, they guy had never even stepped foot in or had any real connection with the region or state. In less than a year, the lake's name was changed back to what the Native Americans called it before the area was settled by white folk. People have to know before they can care. (At the same time, a lot of people objected to the change because: it was too woke, they just didn't like change, nobody knew or cared about the guy and this was just giving him more shine than he deserved, etc.)

I was in the YMCA Indian Guides and Princesses with my kids when they were young. For those that don’t know, it was all dads and their kids with separate programs for the boys and girls. No moms were ever involved which made it special in my mind. It went away when some Native American guy objected to it because we wore headbands and feathers at certain events.

I attribute a lot of the closeness I have with my kids to that program. We have a lot of very fond memories of the things we did together in the program, and it really taught us to respect and learn from each other.

We also learned a lot about Native American history, culture, and life in a very respectful way. Nothing derogatory toward the people or culture was ever permitted.

Ironically, the program was started and developed by a Native American, and then brought down by one.
