Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It was the entire system set up for the people running it, and for each person individually more than even a consistent method.

I was told I'd drop her off and then pick her up when she was ready. The automated call said 10am; when she called she was told 9:30 (good thing she called!). Then when I left I was told it would be sometime between 2 and 4, so I was set to have lunch at 1. I was good and hungry at 1220 when they called and asked me to pick her up a snack at Sprouts and bring it, so I did, figuring I could get lunch on the way back. Then when I dropped them off I was asked to go down to the pharmacy to pick up her meds.

Now, the pharmacy meant standing in a 15-minute line, twice. Then the nurse wanted to go over all the meds and instructions, but I did protest and got to go get lunch, but it was egg bites at Starbucks instead of a delicious omelette as I had planned. Good thing I have an understanding boss! And this sort of thing just happened all day; each person told me their part with no greater-scope awareness and no concern for making sure the communication was accurate.

Obviously, I would do whatever needed, but I was plainly not needed for quite much of the day. They wanted me sort of on tap for whenever, for however long, with no warning. Yet each individual person was good.

Bah.

Humbug.
Systems are usually the problem. Glad your mom is okay.

Gives me an excuse to post this pic. It was cold up there and the little streams of water crossing the road while I was climbing were frozen when I went back down.
91 was the first year for that. Mine is a 92.
Yes. Mine is a Panasonic Paramount. Or Japanamount. But Waterford was producing steel Paramounts in that timeframe too. The Schwinn purists say the Waterford's were a higher quality build(made in the USA). The less pure can be heard preferring the ride of the PDG. I have only ridden the PDG so I can't comnent. This was my second Panasonic Schwinn--the World Voyageur was the other. They are both top notch rides.

We had a high of 103 today, with humidity. I think I've finally, truly acclimated. I just go out and work in it anyway.

They walk everyone immediately if they can. Lowers the risk of blood clots, which used to be a major cause of death after THR.

I could barely get to the bathroom after mine though. She’s doing far better.

Which is good.

I'm paying the price for starting riding too late today.

Drank 50oz water and 20 oz latte during ride, leg cramps started about mile 25.

Got home and guzzled a litre of coco water with a banana and a scoop of whey blended in, then had a pint of water. Luckily that killed the cramps but I'm still feeling absolutely spent.

I have never cramped during a ride. After, yes. If I don't get out before 8:30, there's no point. Prolly the same for you.

I've never cramped before, during or after a ride. I must be doing something wrong.

Oh yes I had a completely different procedure; the giant rod in my femur and bolts across, not just a hip replacement. And of course a massive crash. I was in the hospital for three days; hip replacement is much easier. But of course I only had mine for reference and people saying replacement is "easy" so it's nice to see her actually doing well.

I have a Panasonic-built 1977 Super Le Tour 12.2. Fit and finish is overall excellent. It rides nicely but is a bit portly with only butted CrMo top and down tubes, with the rest straight hi-tensile (IIRC).

Sure is pretty, though. Currently it's hanging in my bedroom as a frameset.

This is crazy. 10-15% of McDonalds' ice cream machines are broken.

Yesterday my coworker and I were talking about some of the local climbs and ended up finding out that we both had the day off tomorrow. I didn't realize that he may have been not totally serious when he suggested we ride to Caesar's Head on our day off.

I asked him today if he was serious about riding that tomorrow and he seemed a bit surprised but said OK.

So guess who gets to ride 54 miles and climb about 5000' tomorrow

There is one 2000 foot climb, looks pretty hard, but do those little bumps add up to 3000 feet?

RWGPS really likes to underestimate rolling terrain, so I’m planning for the worst but hoping for the best. RWGPS says 4800’, Strava says about 5100’. We’ll see, I guess

You're young, you can handle it. Bring a low gear and don't chase faster riders uphill like I do.
