I picked up my charcoal Ristretto off the Paceline Forum classifieds - a perfect fit and a great bike. The workmanship on the frame is very impressive. I've raced it 5 times, got 2nd in a TT, 2nd in a road race, and 2nd in a crit (and 2nd in the omnium as well) in the first week I rode it.

The red one (also metallic) I grabbed from eBay. Same geo except the charcoal one has a 20mm headtube extension (to make it roughly the same geo as a 56 CAAD12), hence the spacers under the stem on the red one.

The plan is for the charcoal twin to be the training/road race rig, and the red one the flatter crit bike (the single 52 ring should be the giveaway).

So far, I really love these rigs. With 5 wheelsets between them to swap around, I have a lot of flexibility for setup next year!

What do you use it for? Fast group rides, hills, mountains, road racing, crits, solo, TTs?
For some applications it is just as good, or better than a new disc brakes bike.

I've one super secret project going on before I post up the 2022 TT bike setup in full glory.

The parts arrive early next week. All I can say is I may get out for $40 instead of $3000. If the $40 gamble fails, whatever. If it fails I'll get $40 worth of fun out of it and use the parts to make a TT themed table lamp or something to give away to the points winner of the 2022 weeknight club TT series.

Gotcha. Just regular use...training/race-bike (mainly crits). We (North Carolina) do have some mountainous terrain in western North Carolina (Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather MTN, etc.) where I feel like disc brakes would be great during the 1-mile + descents, but my time out there is relatively infrequent.

Grandfather lets bikes in? Is that free? That's a paid entrance park. If driving you stop, pay at a gate, then enter. When the family visited I didn't notice anything at the gate about it.

There's some climbs with grades in NC, but Mitchell isn't very steep. I was fine on that years ago on rim brake when I weighed a good bit more than I do now headed back down from the top down to Marion.

Yea - I agree. I don't do the purchasing I did when my kid was racing more, but for many purposes, I'd buy rim brakes - still. We have both, mostly rim brakes, mostly light.

I think you'd be fine regardless on a rim brake anywhere...it's a matter of preference/performance in some situations (more specifically weather conditions). I guess I should've stated "around" Grandfather (or Pisgah)...to provide better context see below:

More notably 181, Shull's Mill, etc. The ride pictured above finished going up the 3-mile entrance to Grandfather which was truly diabolical. You are correct that that entrance is gated and I am unsure if they have that one exception per year for cyclists. There are also multiple routes for going up Mt. Mitchell, so it's a matter of picking your poison in that case (Asheville, Marion, South Carolina...).
