Suntour Sprint Indexing
I’ve been riding a Suntour Sprint equipped Univega Gran Premio for a couple of years. I use it kind of as a training bike, as it’s a bit of a beater. Its really a wonderful ride, and was always in friction mode. I only realized today it has an index mode (doh)!
It is at risk for sale due to N+1-1 equilibrium concern, and now the index shifting is an unexpected surprise.
Any feedback on the Sprint shifter for indexing performance?

Do you have Accushift compatible RDand freewheel?
if everything is compatible and probably adjust it should index well.

This below, mostly.
If everything is to spec, with quality cables/casing, all properly installed and properly adjusted, it should index OK. I don't recall any specific Univega compatibility problems that weren't spec-related.
Just keep in mind that even when frame dimensions, component spec and assembly/adjustment were fully up to snuff, Suntour's indexing was fussier and less reliable than Shimano's.
There's plenty more details to be found here in other posts.

I paired a Sprint indexed with a V-Luxe. It worked perfectly.

6 speed indexed shifter? Less finicky that the 7's.

Thanks for the information. I played with it some today, with mixed results. My RD is Sprint, not Sprint 9000. According to velobase, only the 9000 is index compatible.
One problem is the cable adjuster. The Sprint does not have a built in threaded adjuster, just a smooth hole for the cable housing end. PO might have added this loose adjuster with double nuts. It kind of works, but is very inconvenient.
I can see on velobase that the 9000 added built-in threaded adjuster.
While I was able to get it working somewhat, I was not able to fully tune it to where I was satisfied. Plus if it needs adjustment on road, those double nuts would be a pain.
I put it back to friction for now.
FYI is 6 speed.

Yeah, it's not supposed to work with a non-indexed rear derailleur. To maximize your chances for acceptable performance with that rear derailleur, you'd need to replace that rear cable casing with something that's not as flexy and kinked. And make sure the freewheel and chain are also index-compatible.

One some what inexpensive way I have found to improve shifting on mixed matched Suntour stuff is to add simple frame extender to the rear dropout. Which will give you a bit more wiggle room and costs less than $10 so its probably worth a try.

I think the best way to achieve indexing is to switch to Shimano.

Had 7-speed Sprint on my old Faggin. It worked great! They finally figured out brakes with that group as well.
