1980 Fuji S12-S 18 Speed

This bike has been in storage for a long time.

Can someone help me with the original manufacturer's specs?

Does anyone have a step by step guide for getting this bike road read again.

Google is your friend. Good collection of Fuji catalogs and specs online.

As far as getting back on the road, you'll need to share more details and photos to make that determination.

Serial Number is FL005624. If I'm reading the codes correctly, it was built in the F production facility in December of 1980. I couldn't find this bike in the 1980 catalog. From what I've seen, S-12 S 18 speeds didn't start until 1981.

What information do you need to discuss this bike?

How old are the tires, cables, tubes? Do the wheels need trueing? What condition is the bar tape and the saddle? Are yo oging to overhaul all of the bearings? What type of riding are you planning?

Can you post some pics?

Some pictures would help to get an idea of the condition of the bike. Ideally, you'd overhaul the bike (replace the ball bearings in the hubs, bottom bracket, and headset and use fresh grease), replace the consumables (brake and derailleur cables and housing as well as tires/tubes and the chain). You may not need to do that much which is why the pics will help give us an idea of the condition.

This is not hard to to and you can do it yourself if you're handy around tools and willing to learn. There are how to guides on the web for how to do this. The Sheldon Brown website is invaluable; so is the Park tool website.

You may want to invest in a basic book on bike repair. Your bike is much older of course so look around for something 2d hand or via a kindle edition ike this, https://www.amazon.com/Sloanes-New-B.../dp/0671619470

If it was built in December of '80 it was likely an '81 model year bike. As with cars and some other stuff, the next year's goodies usually come out in the fall.

Also, it's possible that the bike was built as a 12-speed and someone upgraded it to later specs.

I don't know how to upload pictures. The link asks for a URL.

Everything except the tires looks original. The front wheel is true. The rear wheel is a little off. I will just ride it in the neighborhood for now. The seat is generic. I will put a specialized saddle on. So far all I have done is clean it. Next is to lube the chain. I will probably have to look at greasing the hubs before I ride it. I've never done that before.

Thanks for the info.

When you do your reply click the Go Advanced button and you'll get a screen with more icons at the top including a paper clip. Click that to Manage Attachments. The top section should be Add Files From Your Computer. Browse out to the one you want, select, close that screen, then click the clip again to Insert into your reply.

^^^ This ^^^ Dec '80 build date is most assuredly a '81 model year bike!

My Fuji S-10S, Serial K9I003xx was built in September of '74 as a '75 model. I bought it new in October of '76 as a scratched floor model that nobody wanted.

The condition looks to be incredibly good... I'd do all the normal stuff like repacking the bearings, but that looks like even the cable housings, cables and rubber parts are in good shape. Fantastic bike!

Looking at the "18 speed" decal on the chainstay. Why would Fuji call the model an S12? Wouldn't it be an S18? Seems like an oxymoron.

Looks terrific. Recall a friend of mine whom toured with us back in 1980 had the exact model and color. Dig the Fuji marked Suntour shift group.

I'm not positive but those hubs may have sealed cartridge bearings. (I had an S12-S Ltd / twelve speed with the cartridge bearing hubs.)

It's just a name. However, they did make the 10-speed S10-S and the 12-speed S12-S so you would expect the progression to continue, but don't try to second-guess manufacturers' naming conventions.

S-12S and S-12S Ltd were two distinctly different models.

Correct and very well aware of. We purchased these bikes brand new back then from a Fuji authorized dealer. The OP's is original as equipped with 18 speed / triple. My S-12s Ltd was a twelve speed, black with light gold accent on the head tube.

Same dealer was selling Trek. I forget which model but my brother purchased one.

Anyways, my recollection of touring on the loaded S12s Ltd is memorable. Interesting vintage bike today but its more of a whippy torsional frame. Wouldn't be my standard for long tour these days.

Those have fabulous ride quality. Frame tubing is the ancestor of today's Kaisei tubes. When the store I worked at sold those and Treks, the Fujis were the more highly regarded rides--to us they made the 600 and 700 series Treks feel like dogs.
