Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

( and this will mean the grade / GPA 'clock' begins ticking early ... freshmen/9th grade year)
But, the study habits needed to do that need to be instilled starting in first grade.

Don't forget Washington and Lee.

I was accepted into its law school, and it was actually my first choice. Ultimately didn't want to live on the East Coast though.

Probably won’t be living in VA then, but that’s not the point. The point is having my wife close doors on our children. That’s the way I see it. Obviously if school is not their forte and they don’t manage any scholarships out of state is out of the question.

Yorktown Beach. I like to think this is how it looked when the French showed up to help kick some red coat ass. I’m sure the side walk was there for walking pleasure.

I took some drive by pictures of the battlefield but they are blurry and just look like shaky camera grass.

Prolly right.

As a mid-west white trash type with no family money, I'm sure I was an affirmative action admit.

I'm sure I would have been an odd duck at W&L. Hell, I was an odd duck at SMU.

As I was doing this I realized that the rider - a big guy, with long blond hair and a big bushy beard, not wearing a shirt but wearing gym shorts, was none other than our own "Larry Sellerz". So I shouted, "Hey, LARRY!"

He shouted back, "It's GABE!"

So I turned around and chased him down and introduced myself, then rode with him for s short bit. Then we stopped and he showed me his rear brake, where it had been knocked off center in the crash he described last week. The left caliper arm was tied to the seatstay with brown twine, so it wouldn't rub on the rim. I suggested he loosen the whole thing, center it, and retighten the mounting bold. That didn't seem to have occurred to him.

He was going the other way, so I said "Nice to meet you" and turned back around.
Worlds are colliding!

This... I did horribly in college for a while because I could get through lower levels without that. I'm ok, but it would have been much better the other way.

Though in general I try not to imagine ways I could have supposedly made my life better; my unhappiness is mostly internal. But process over results, and I'd advise the other way.

My son is naturally pretty bright, and because of that he glided through school without having to put in much study effort. Graduated 15 out of about 250 in high school.

Then, he got to A&M and enrolled in the engineering program which is pretty tough, and had his "Oh [another word for excrement]!" moment after his first round of tests. He then learned that he really needed to hit the books since he was no longer in high school.

Both kids went to schools where every student was essentially in the top 10% of their high school class. When they started, I told them both that all those kids that were in the lower 90% of their high school classes were no longer their classmates and that every other kid did as well or better than them in high school. Being in the top 10% of the top 10% is not easy!

I did okay in college, but flamed out in grad school. And I'm not unhappy about that at all. The path I took worked much better for how my mind works. I am not creative, so I can't really do the 'Broad Scope' kind of stuff but I'm really good at problem solving, data analysis, and general tinkering. So I'm not the guy to come up with the Grand Idea, but I'm the guy to make it work. So that's what I've done for 40 years.

I found I couldn't motivate myself to work for a degree 4-5 years in the future. BUT pay me a salary, and I can motivate myself.
