Addiction 2022.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same with those that I know. Lots of frustration and dissatisfaction.

The law business has changed a lot in my 38 years of practice, but things are not quite as dysfunctional as the medical industry. The one thing that probably saves us is we do not have to rely on insurance companies or third-party payors. I quit working for insurance companies (defending injury cases) in 1991, and never looked back.

Politics has f'ed up the law biz, especially if you practice in a state with elected judges. Federal court practice (which I now prefer) is not so bad, but there are some judges to watch out for.

I’ve never actually met my No. 1 cat sitter, but my recycling bins reveal some things about her dietary habits. She drinks a lot of Pepsi and stuff from Dunkin’. One time I found a receipt from CVS under my couch. She probably dropped it and it got blown under the couch by the heater. There was a 2L bottle of Pepsi on the receipt. I also found a McDonald’s bag in my trash one time.

Imagine if a paralegal could work autonomously or semi-autonomously and compete with you and say they can do "everything" a lawyer could do. That's a taste of noctors. Plus, imagine that your fees were capped at say, $100/hr, and that everyone got paid the same, including paralegals, because of a 3rd party payor system.

There is more to it than that, but yeah, the healthcare system is dysfunctional in many ways.

I really wonder if we will eventually need a massive public works to irrigate the SW from the Great Lakes.

I understand and get it, and also agree with you.

The fee issue is the reason I will not work for insurance companies. They have commoditized their work to the point where they are dictating that lawyers are paid very low rates or low flat rates per case, and I want nothing to do with that. A lot of the insurance defense lawyers are getting paid $100-150/hour and being told what they can and cannot do in the course of a case. No thank you.

And then the added fun that many doctors (not the ones on this thread it appears) got into it for the wrong reasons and only care about things that are easy symptom matches to well-known and treatable issues and dismiss anything else.

The single speed needs new tires. Excel has a good special in these - Hutchinson Fusion 5 Performance Tire OE 2-Pack Excel Sports | Shop Online From Boulder Colorado

No experience with Hutchinsons, but it's a low risk opportunity to try them out.

Yes, the term commoditized is very accurate term to describe what has happened. It's unfortunate. Some physicians have done an "Atlas shrugged" move and gone "concierge" which is understandable but in some ways makes the system even worse as a whole. Sigh.

I've run the tubeless version. Not my absolute favorite tires, but they were good and they're a steal at the prices that Excel has been asking lately.

18 year old cannot get themselves to the doctor for a health check?

Too much hovering. IMHO.

What's the annual membership fee? It's typically $1500 around here. As per previous posting, I understand that this is an option but it's a sucky one.

I have no idea. For fairness, when I went to college I was 17 and no driver's license, so I wouldn't have either.

The link in the email 404s. If you correct it () the page is their Contact Us, with no price info. Awesome.

Not sweating it either way too much until I move. Sick of things.

I had a great PCP at HUP who did that decades ago. I was sorry to have that happen. He was actually one of the top fundraisers in the MS City to Shore ride. The last time I saw him was when I passed him during the event several years ago.

I saw Barnett win a supercross at the L.A. Colosseum. His physical conditioning was evident and he trounced the field on the demanding track. It was said he ran 5 miles in sand every day, then a weight session, then put 5 gallons of gas through his practice bike. I know they're all supreme athletes but that guy was a machine.
