Canti Mounts - What are they good for if you are not using them?

Canti Mounts - What are they good for if you are not using them?
First time poster. My stoker and I have been riding a budge tandem for 3 years and want to move up a notch in quality. I'm thinking of buying a used Cannondale MT800. It has both disc and canti mounts and is using the disc mounts for braking. Are the canti mounts good for anything else? I don't like the look of them on the frame and if there is no use for them, can they be taken off?

It's merely a design feature from the frame manufacturer to allow the use of canti's as desired by the end user. Not everyone wants disc brakes, this gives you an option. If you really object to the look, consider a different frame designed only for disc brakes.

I'm not sure about the MT800, but some of the 'dales had removable posts for the canti brakes so at least you didn't have them sticking out, even if there were still holes where they screwed in.
You probably could mount lights on them as well.

It would be wise not to shave them off completely, it is a very robust weld and you risk weakening the seat stays / forks if you remove them.

While I understand it's become much less common as disc brakes have improved, leaving rear canti posts leaves you the option of running cantis or v-brakes and an Arai drum should you ever choose to.
They do make convenient mounting points as has already been noted.

How did you get your mounts to point horizontal? The look reminds me of a '57 Chevy. Very cool.

Hi, The Cannondale is a 2000 model, I swapped out the raked forks for a set of Fatty forks so I could use disks all round.
On the reflector mounts, I removed the studs and on the rear used some aluminium bar, cut at an angle so it would be horizontal, centre drilled and threaded it so I could screw the reflectors in, same with the fronts, except I used square bar.
Would have liked to have lights in there but my knowledge of electrics and the fear it would be a little unsightly put me off

We use our canti mounts on the rear for a second set of brakes as a backup for the disc. The stoker controls the V-brake, pilot controls the disc.
You can also attach a Velogical rim dynamo to a canti mount, front or rear.
