How not ideal is 28h really?

I know there's no legit reason to chose 28h over 32h but I'm converting one of my hybrids to a xc MTB. I have two wheel sets that I built, nearly identical, all DT. One is 350 hubs and 32h XR-361 rims, the other is 240 hubs and 28h XR-361 rims which are straight pull spokes, last f'n time I build a wheel with straight pull! The one hybrid that I use for touring, all day cruising has the 350's and I'd like to keep it that way. The 350's have the 18t clutch parts and they're like butter, feels and sounds soo much better for a bike I'm going to spend all day on. The 240's have the 36t clutch parts and sounds only slightly more annoying than a screaming baby. I'm hopeful bouncing off rocks and trees will distract me from that sound, and the more engaement points might actually be useful. So are the 28h wheels ok for lighter MTB use, or should I really repurpose the 32h to the MTB and put the 28h on the hybrid?

Depends on your weight, your riding, and the rims. There are a number CF wheels meant for hard riding using 28h these days.
