Are alleycats dying out?
Ive been trying to find alleycats near me (San Francisco bay area) and not finding luck. has the scene died down a bit over the last decade? I really want to race in one, I was invited to one when I was delivering food in Ohio but didn't really know what it was so didn't go. It seems like the urban track cycling scene isn't as common as it once was, but I really don't know. Where should I look to find alleycats

It's definitely dying down since the fixie foo craze peaked years ago and then started to wane. I would expect in someplace like SF there's still an occasional alleycat.
I wanted to find one in the quaint little provincial city of Salt Lake recently. I just asked Google, and BOOM! there was one coming up, so I entered it. Super fun.

No idea for sf. I know Milwaukee and Chicago and NY still have them. Also seems like a slight increase in group rides, but nothing like a decade or so ago.

Just FYI there is a deadly pandemic that has been sweeping the world for about 2 years and is getting worse again because we are beyond idiotic and can't do the simple tasks to end the spread and get rid of COVID. Hosting any large gatherings right now is just beyond moronic and politicizing it is even worse. Bicycle couriers have sort of died down a little and the fixed gear craze maybe has died down as well but really the pandemic is a big part of why you probably haven't seen them last year or this year as much.
If we can ever go back to the new normal I am sure we shall see some racing going on but until that time enjoy your bike solo or with a few close trusted friends who are also vaccinated. If you need to race, Zwift is perfect.

They need to make Trilocross it is even sketchier cyclocross on triathlon bikes and the swim section is a muddy puddle.

I have seen them still happening and video proof on youtube. The pandemic is for sure a factor and may again cancel one of my fav classic bike events, the eroica. I have not decided for sure yet.
Looks like they may not been happening much since 2018 in US

The Nationals series ran through 2019, but were canceled in 2020 due to Covid. At least this year the Fiesta Island series ran from April through June.
I posted that to show what the sport is about, not to provide an up-to-the-minute video update.

We had one last month. I can't recall there ever being one here before it either. Always wanted to do one, but I hate the fixed only and/or no brakes rule, they typically have.

I know some of these races used to be fixed gear only, but they're not all that way. I did my first one a few months ago, in Salt Lake City. There were no such restrictions, and I saw all kinds of bikes there. (I happened to ride a FG, just because I thought that would be fun.)

I by random chance saw this topic scrolling past and wanted to post. I don't do anything single/fixed but could give a data point. Local to me there's a shop that once/twice a year they host a fun day out on the town, or night. It is NOT a knocking over trashcans and running red lights at 25mph kind of deal. But, you still "go from a to b then c and maybe d e and f" as you see best fit with local knowledge while either collecting playing cards at each stop OR needing to find/photo a specific item at the stop.
Also, all year round, they have several "challenge" routes you can do for a patch. Or they do a mountain bike version and make a "get all the achievements on the map" deal where you get a patch or something once you've done it.
Probably not what you're looking for, but our locale does what I described a few times a year.
