1980 Trek 710 full Reynolds 531 22.5 inch size CHEAP with ISSUES

The 710 was the predecessor to the highly desirable Trek 720, so this is a good one!

I recently picked up a Trek 710, 1980+/-. Problem is that it has freckles of rust under the paint, no large spots, just a lot of small ones. So it needs a full strip and a powder coat. No dents.

Here's a chance to get a vintage steel Trek in ANY color you want! Personally, I would add canti studs and a mid fork rack braze ons if I was going repaint, and just make a full tourer out of it.

If upon stripping, any of the spots are fatal, I will refund the price. Can't refund shipping, as I would be out that money. I don't see anything that is fatal. Just a bunch of small freckles.

I would take it on myself, heck, its even my size, but I have far too many projects right now, and far too many keepers.

SOLD

Yep. I bought it for the parts, which were a mish mash but with some good ones. I'll be adding it to the keeper fleet if no one wants it (any excuse to add one more.....).

I have a picture of the top tube length. I'll post some here. Geometry can all be found on the vintage Trek site, although I don't know if they cover standover. 2nd pic is top tube center to center (~56cm), 3rd is the seat tube, center to top (22 1/2 inches).

I've already dismantled the bike, otherwise, I would gladly measure standover.

I had a 600 in this size. Standover was about 31 or 31.5 inches if I recall. Slightly different geometry, though.

Thanks (and to wrk101 as well for the TT length).

This may be just a tad big for me.

Treks back then really jumped sizes. They usually had a 19 inch, a 21 inch, a 22 1/2 inch, a 24 inch and a 25 1/2 inch. Even earlier, some Schwinn road bikes were 22 inch, 24 inch and 26 inch.

On shipping, FWIW, I shipped a frame to CA today. $38 shipping, plus $10 for packing materials. Closer would be cheaper of course. Continental USA only on this one.

And as mentioned earlier, pick up in person and I will give a discount. Plus you'll probably want a few parts. No one leaves the thrifty guy's workshop without a full car or truck. And bring trade stock, win/win. Just no frames in trade, as I definitely have way too many of them already (check my avatar, I have several storage areas just like this).

I guess it's fortunate you didn't post this on the 14th - I was in Asheville and would have been there in a flash. I have too many projects as it is.

I double checked serial number, here's what I found:

H 3 I 9 H 9 4:

According to vintage Trek:

H = 710 model

3 = 22.5 inch size

I = September

9 = 1979

H94 = Sequence number

So its either a late 1979 or really early 1980.

Tempting but how the heck do you tell if the rust is fatal or not once it's been stripped?

Edit: Looks like canopus bit on the bike. If it's still available, I'm interested as well.

Don't stress over the rust. I have an 81 version of this same frame in the 24" and it has the same stupid zits. I took an 18g needle and popped one of the zits and hit solid steel underneath, no worries. I've ridden it everywhere with no issues. It really is an amazing bike and it sees as much time as my Gunnar Crosshairs.

I had something similar. No problems with the steel, but I did strip it. This is what I found:

It really looked like a factory defect on the original paint.

I'm glad this is going to a good home. I wanted it bad, but I have so many unbuilt frames already... Too many for my Brooklyn apartment.

Me too! I probably have a two year backlog right now..... Fortunately, here in Hooverville, storage space is relatively cheap. But it still gets full. I need to attack the extra wheel sets I have next. Need to see how bike flights does on wheel shipping.
