Raleigh twenty shopper

I have a Raleigh twenty shopper trying to find an approximate build date, it has a dual cable 5 - speed Sturmey-archer hub with aluminum rims(not sure of the brand)

as you can see, it is of the non-folding variety. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks - Gerry

Wow!

Look on the barrel of the rear hub. They have a date code on it.

After 72-73 would be my guess. Not sure when reflectors for pedals were standard which is another clue.

Very nice machine!

Nice looking Bike! Yeah what 3speedslow said - date code on the hub (assuming it is original to the bike).

Seems to be only missing the rear fender. I assume a fender from a Twenty Folder would be identical?

There is nothing stamped on the hub body, just a sticker

Just this

Where do they put the serial numbers on these bikes

Nice sleuthing!
dedhed

The rims have two possible sizes, 406 or 451. 406 is easy to find, 451 not so but not impossible. Jealous yours came with alloy from the get go.

So, I am guessing that one is the 20 in. and the other is the 22 in. or possibly the 16 in. for the rsw-16
Mine is the 20 in. variety

A Raleigh Shopper as opposed to a Raleigh Chopper. Interesting. They have some similarities. Well of course they do, they came from the same company.

This image was from the website https://www.thespoken.cc/raleigh-chopper that highlights the designer of the Raleigh Chopper. This one has a Sturmey Archer 3 speed. And a spoke protector for the non-existent derailleur. More chrome was better back then.

The Shopper should be a nice ride as a result of not having a the weight and perhaps a smidge of movement of the hinge in the middle of the frame. My preference would be the non-folding version here.

Keep the pictures coming. Nice find.

Both 406 and 451 are for the 20” size designation. Important for tire buying.

What is the difference between the two then, there are no identifying marks on my wheels, but they cleaned up really nice 😀

Ok, don't answer the last question, I figured it out, mine are 20 x 1⅜ according to the French made Michelins (of course, the harder to find ones)

Dang they sure did! Excamine the tire on it for the erd number. It should come after the 20”x ?? Designation. Most bikes destined for the US market were 406. English markets were the other.

Yes, it is a basket bracket. Maybe for something like the one pictured.

Also, here's a link for a retro-looking tire; more modern looking ones can be found as ETRTO 451 are also used in BMX. Good luck, and keep us posted!

fun find!

in case you should elect to do something with the chainset keep in mind that shell width on these is 76mm

the front basket bracket is reminiscent of the Lichtenstein radar antenna on the ME Bf110 night fighter -
