Good Buy? 1995 Santana Arriva Tandem Bicycle
We had a tandem a while ago and now we want to get one again. We found a 1995 Santana Arriva Tandem Bicycle, Size: 58 cm front and 53 cm rear with Shimano Deore components with 28/44/54 front chain rings and 8 speed 12 - 32 rear cassette and Shimano Bar End shifters. They are asking $650. Is this a good buy? I am 6 ft and my wife is 5' 6". Will we fit ok on this size?

Looks like a pretty good deal and the size should work well. You will want to check the size on the steer tube on the fork, if it is one inch Santana recommends replacement. I think the replacement forks are chrome.

If it's a functioning bike and not a rustbucket, that's a good deal around here. People ask more for the more-obsolete 27"/Suntour versions, but the later indexing Shimano versions list for even higher and disappear quick. I got a later similar Burley for less but I watched the market for months to find it.

I'd say a 1995 for $650 is a very good deal, assuming everything looks good and the frame fits. I'm nearly certain a 1995 Santana would have the 1.25-inch threadless fork steerer, not a 1-inch, BTW.

Arriva was the bottom of the line at that time. Bit heavy but a good starter tandem if it fits properly.

Also check crank length on the rear, if they are 175mm that might be a problem, 170mm should be ok.

You don't say where you are, so it's hard to compare to your local market and riding situation. If I recall correctly the Arriva I had was over 50 lbs. I thought the Burley was a lightweight by comparison at only 47 lbs! It's a lot to haul up a hill if you're riding calls for climbs.

I have a 1999 Arriva that we will be selling as soon as I get it cleaned up (I've been saying that for a year...)
It has Ultegra STI and I believe XT with a drum brake. It's a large and weighs in at 51 lbs ready to ride.
