Having had both a 3.0 series crit bike and a 3.8 series touring frame, my opinion is exactly the opposite. The 3.0 on 23s was a jackhammer, while the 3.8 on 35s was like a Benz 560SEL... smooth, comfortable, tight... and faster and better-handling than you'd think. It's amazing what a long wheelbase and chainstays do for the ride of a bike.

I'd put the late 80s / early 90s Can O' Ale T-series on the list of the greatest production loaded tourers of all time. Few were as good, and none were clearly better.

Dream bike. That sloping fork crown is easily the best pairing with those frames. The lugged forks all look too bulky, and the unicrown always looks unrefined in comparison. Maybe one day I'll find one of these in a 25".

I wouldn’t turn one down, but by 1989 Miyata 1000s had a hyperglide cassette in back and 700c wheels. I would have thought Miyata would be the more conservative maker.

Grail worthy bike at any time. I had a '90 ST400 with cantis. These are superb bikes/frames, and I still want an ST1000.

I just got this Cannondale tourer yesterday. The serial number says it was made in July 1989, but the color and equipment look more like a 1990 ST400. It has several non-original parts, including 27 inch front wheel and 700 rear, but the frame should clean up nice. It also has front fork mounts for the pair of Blackburn Custom Lowrider racks I bought by mistake last year.

1989? ST400, as purchased.
