105 hoods. How to make them last?

Have a almost complete tri-color 600 group set on a 1999 Trek 320 road bike. They used the number 320 for "mountain bike" also. It has the early 105 2 x 8 shifters. What can be done to keep the hoods in good shape and useable the longest? Am enjoying the way this bike shifts and rides and would like to keep it in its current configuration as long as possible.

I use Armor All on my hoods every so often to keep the rubber pliable.
