This works well on a crowded MUP.

I carry my fly fishing rod (inside a PVC tube with the ends capped) in the same way, but mine is also sitting on and secured to the rack, and has minimal pedaling interference. I've easily gotten to fishing spots up to 10 miles away, on gravel roads.

It should not be different than or more difficult than carrying a polo mallet.
Attach to your hip with something that lets it swing and to hang straight down. It is not likely to interfere with pedaling. Expect it to just hang.
A somewhat useful variation is carrying a rim or a wheel. Wear a belt, lace the belt under the rim, ride away. Used to do this all the time when riding to bike shop to get in van and go to the race. Utility wheels on bike, race wheels attached to belt. No problem at all to pedal.

Sword bag
Probably your cheapest and easiest option that's actually designed for the task. I think Hanwei makes a higher quality version as well. This one's back ordered, but you could probably find similar on Amazon.

Will a SON hub dyno charge up a light saber in a 10 mile commute? I could try to just use the Force, I guess.

I love how when an old thread like this comes around we get fresh jokes from the present occupants

I am sorry to tell you this, but light sabers require a special magic Jedi crystal that does not actually exist in reality. But it’s a quest item in a lot of Jedi video games. Just like kryptonite, the material properties are subject to dramatic necessity.

Q: Does anybody know how to carry a sword on a bike?
A: Carefully, one would think.
