I am looking to replace my wool ankle high Pearl Izumi socks. It appears they don't make them anymore, except in woman's sizes. (The largest is too small for me, I've tried it). I'm looking for a sock that is 1) wool, 2) ankle high, 3)thin and 4)has no big seam across toe area. I wear wool year round for its anti-bacterial properties and feel. I've looked at crew length, since Pearl Izumi still makes them, but they seem to be thicker, which I don't prefer for warmer riding. Thanks in advance!
- wool
- ankle height
- thin
- no seam at toe area [Edit: there is a seam, but it has a low profile]
One thing: the Sock Guy heel and toe are made from a synthetic material. I consider this a benefit, as the all-wool socks wear out quickly in the toe and heel.
Ankle height socks are out of style, so there aren't many to choose from. I have their hiker sock, which is identical to the old cycling sock. They also have this placid lake sock.

I have been wearing the Sock Guy wool socks for many years. They also made my custom wool socks when I had a bike touring company.

SockGuy construction clearly looks to be conventional, i.e. with a toe seam:

How does does Darn Tough exchange warranty work?
If I buy them from a local store, just straight up no questions swap, or do I have to apply for an RMA?
I'm looking for socks I can wear indoors that won't go holey after a week, usually at the heels.
I know socks are supposed to be used a liners for footwear, but sorry, I like to wear just socks indoors.

I love wool sweaters and socks. They simply cannot last forever. I have not found wool to be expensive.

68 posts. No mentions of Bombas. Opinions?*
*About the socks, not about the fact nobody has mentioned them.

A similar question over on the Cycling UK (Cyclists Touring Club, since 1878) forum drew several recommendations for DeFeet Woolie Boolie socks. Now you know as much as I do about them.

Need a wool sock recommendation
I laugh at this, but then, my favorite clothes are the ones my 86 year old mother has purchased for me....as gifts. Not a big shopper myself, so it seldom occurs to me that I need a new whatever it is in off-the-bike clothing. Appreciate that I have one parent left with good taste in clothes, lol. I mostly buy cycling/equestrian clothing, ha.
On topic comment for the OP, Darn Tough wool socks have no seam at the toe box. Wear forever, and they make an over the ankle height. They are not cycle specific, but are geared towards running/athletics. I've been using their heavier wool mid calf for several seasons. No signs of wear, and they just work....fabulously. Darn Tough

I'm a fan of Swiftwick Pursuit for winter socks. In he summer I like the usual thin socks. I have cold feed and Swiftwick are fairly thin and I can double up on them with my summer shoes. Once I switch to winter cycling shoes I go back to single pair.
