Built up the my Tommaso frame and took it for spin this morning. I'm quite happy with it so far.
I saw a dead owl along the way, you don't see that every day. My best guess is that it either ate a poisoned rodent, or got the business end of rattlesnake.
When I got home, I jumped in the pool and found this little monster swimming around. It was moving pretty quickly, but when I rescued it, it sat there for a few minutes. I'm guessing it was pretty tired, it could have been in there quite a while. Any other spider I would have just squashed, but tarantulas are pretty cool.

Oh, a barn owl--such beautiful bird! Very widely distributed. In Africa, I think they're known as the "monkey-faced owl."

Yes, that's likely the case with this poor fellow. I think that barn owls are also more active during the morning and evening than most other owls, which could also expose them to more car strikes.

to avoid the heat of the day, I ended up doing a sunset ride. No sun beating down on me, leaving me to enjoy the humidity and bugs and the sunset.
Fortunately, the sunset was rather scenic!

Riding with @Andy_K yesterday we decided to get a bit of climbing in here in Portlandia. Coming up Saltzman Road, not too far from Hwy 30 we came across this sign.
Shout out to Mark Rainey ata Groody Brothers, who did the magnificent powder coat job on Andy's Motobecane. Andy decided to wear his Groody Bros. jersey to commemorate the occasion.

from Sunday's ride...
The ride started at Alton, Illinois and traveled north to Pere Marquette park, and then south to the Chain of Rocks bridge. The ride is mostly on a bike path, and parallels the Mississippi and Illinois rivers.
A few shots from the stretch from Alton to Pere Marquette park...
a lighthouse at Grafton, looking south at the bluffs along the Mississippi
a closer look at the river and bluffs
a distinctly C&V barn adjacent to the bike path
more photos to come.

more pics from Sunday's ride along the Mississippi river, near Alton, IL
a barge working its way up the river.....
this looks like an egret to me, but I have no idea. Still, nice to see some wild life on the river!
and another bird... maybe a heron? or a crane? Anyone know for sure?

continuing with photos from my bike ride along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers near Alton, Illinois....
Alton, like more than a few river towns, has a steep transition from the plains to the river valley. There was status to being on top of the hill, if only to avoid spring floods. I'm not sure why the steep roads were also prized as a location to build a house. Some of the old Victorian houses still exist and are in good shape, though!
and a hill in the business district.
City Hall is at the top, with a very nice view of the river.
