Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

(a) What was the rule about where you could stand? And (b) given (a), where was the best place to shoot when the ball was midfield?

Ah, the joys of a bike tour. Yesterday was rain so we did a truncated ride, 36 miles instead of 66 miles. Today is 60° and a cold 16-20 mph wind coming off of Lake Superior. Our 66 miler will certainly be truncated again.

Still more scenic than the couch.

Ugh.

I have been checking out the forecast for Burlington, VT for Sunday and Monday, when I will be there. Looks decent. Highs of 78 and 69, respectively, Nights in the upper 50s. Chance of rain both days 25%. Tempted to reserve a lean-to just in case. In 2018 it was rainy much of the morning of my second day there, and the wind coming off Lake Champlain was quite cold.

But 98 miles doesn't count as a century.

Back in the brat pack days, Sheedy had that look that you knew it would be a fun ride. But, you also knew she might be a little bit psycho.

I have no idea what she is/was really like.

Well, at the time it was pretty loose, and I could go pretty much anywhere except the in bounds area of the field or court. The area between the 20s was not good because of all of the players and coaches in that area. I'd typically shoot from the end zone. Sometimes I'd move to the sidelines when the ball was in the red zone to either shoot side shots of runners, the defense, or receivers in the end zone. Once the refs got to know that you wouldn't get in their way or in the way of the plays, they were pretty relaxed.

I did it for about a year after the kids graduated, but then stopped. The districts started closing down field access because parents were complaining that parents with big lenses got on the field but they couldn't go on field with their cell phones for pictures. You could still get on, but you had to apply for on-field credential before every game, which made it a real hassle. That coupled with no kids in school took the fun out of it.

There were guys shooting for MaxPreps that were doing it to make money. My main thing was just to take pictures of the kids and their classmates for them. There was never any real money in it.

This one was from the end zone with either a 300mm or 400mm -

Sideline shot -
