1984 Masi - Mint

I've got a mint condition Masi 1984 Gran Criterium in my collection and have no idea if it's worth a lot or a little. It's without blemishes. Campy everything except drive train which is Sante'.

Any one have a clue to it's value or worth or collectability or it's scrap value?

Without pictures it's worth $.05. It really depends on condition, where and how you're selling and size . It's definitely worth something...but it could range from $600 - $1200. The sante mix won't help it's case, especially when it's the wrong year. Personally I think sante looks awful and doesn't belong on a campy-fied Italian. I'm not a purist, but mixing sante and campy on a masi gc will hurt value.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

Coupla things....you need to post this over in the C&V appraisal and valuation sub forum, and you'll need to post good clear pictures - a good full overall view from the drive side, close ups of components and any decals, like the tubing spec decal, etc. also, if you know the specific components, list those too. No way to really ballpark it until we can see it.

Cheers,

Joe

Most of the value is in the frame, show us some pictures of that. (detail shots, in focus are important to help determine condition).

How are you planning to sell it? Craigslist? Ebay?

Post it here (actually it will probably just get moved there): https://www.bikeforums.net/forumdispl...-and-Inquiries

Would need full bike pictures from the gear side. In all honesty I'd remove the Sante, sell it on Ebay and then buy period correct Super Record derailleurs and shifter. In the end you may come out a few bucks ahead on the derailleur/shifter swap and you'd make the bike much more appelaing to the aficionados.

I hear you on the Campy gear. I'm sure I'll do that. Regarding the frame - it has been ridden but not much - it's almost in new condition. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

On the bottom bracket will be some letters and numerals, they will show the size by Masi Measure and the serial number which will advise the build date, '84 is right in there. Sante is not.
Size will have some factor as to the value, all I can tell is that is is not really small. Black is a plus.
Be careful with the term Mint, mint is to me and many others is near perfect.
Having the original Masi water bottle is a plus.
The type of wheels is has will also play a part.
"San Marcos" mass are gaining a following but have been undervalued in the past.
They were built in small batches and by some good builders. Joe Starck built a number in the middle 80's.
The negative is that is has Henry James sourced lugs, to many just not the classic design of the "ref. 32" design used by Masi for a over a decade prior.

Here's some pictures - hopefully this helps. If high pixel large pictures would help, I can load to a website. Let me know. The numbers on the bottom bracket are M60 and 4086. According to the bhovey website, this is an '84. Also, I believe the size of the bike is 56 or 57 cm.

And, by the way, I bought this off Craigslist 5 years ago. The person I bought it from had just purchased it from a resellit shop for $200. I paid him $600, recognizing it as a beautiful bike and with the Masi name. I've watched eBay over the years but the prices jump up and down and I don't know why one bike sells for $4000 and another one just like it sells for $1500. Timing? Components? Pictures?

God, if that frame isn't mint, it sure is very clean and it ooks like it hardly did any miles in it's life, judging from the condition of the BB and how clean it is under the fork crown. Not mInt which would be perfect, but certainly in VGC!. I agree that the Sante derailleurs and shifters are most likely a replacement for what must have been a full Campy NR or SR drivetrain on the bike. Get it back to full Campy and the price of the bike will go up substantially.

I would clean up what you can, fit the proper Campy pieces, and use as many well lit, good photos as possible if you are listing it on eBay. Like anything, prices fluctuate...but also, think about the best time for when the auction will end, so that bidders will be home and tuned in. Describe it in detail, and include specific component names and all the sizing info. It should bring a decent price.

Good Luck,

Joe

Real nice! Replace the seat, bar tape, and bottle cage before selling.

M60 means a 60 cm by Masi Measure. Describe it that way, those who will be interested know Masis are "small" to their stated measure. Masi measured to the tip top of the seat lug, and that was probably before filing. Don't fight it, embrace it.

Just like a black automobile, Black bicycles must be super clean and dust free to image well, but look terrific when they are, well for the next ten minutes of their lives anyway.

Price on ebay can vary for any number of reasons, size, seller reputation, confidence in the bidder pool that the bike will be well packed and arrived safe. No buyer wants a bike needing almost no work to become a nightmare project or requiring the deal be unwound.
Seller's who have built up a good reputation get more, more often.
I could see a winning bid going from $700 to $1,400. but not the high end with that saddle, tape and non Campagnolo equipment. If it was smaller, it could fetch more.

I sold this black '84 M60 GC (#4099) a bit more than a year ago for $2200 on eBay. I bought it back for the same price off of CL a couple of months ago. The buyer had replaced the rims but it was otherwise as I sold it.

I would say your bike would sell for a significant discount from that price.
