Schmiegle's Silver Surfer Build
Hello!
My name is Michael but my friends call me Schmiegle!
I have been dreaming of this build for about 3 years, keeping my eye open for the best steel frame candidate I could find!
Found: 1971 (?) Peugeot PX-10 (52cm)
Location: Dumpster
Cost: Free!

40 year old conversions never look good, especially with deepdish rims and mishmashed components like that. hopefully the end result is functional.

😄 All good! I'm aware that the hater skewed hyperbole is merely saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!"
To your point, I might go with the more standard Circle Paul Comp chain ring but not sure...
And YES!!!! Have little doubt!

What did you do with the original parts? That Stronglight crank is great, why not give it a polishing and use it?
Cool find though. I wish I found stuff like that in the trash.

Haven't put any effort into the Stonglight crank... Yet! I suspect it can be cleaned up nicely. But a couple things with that path:
Can it be disassembled into a single speed crankset on the same 44mm chain line as the rear hub? ISO BB spindle should fit.
Is it 170mm arm length, as if prefer to maximize the mechanical advantage on the single speed?
Is the pedal threading the same as I haven't procured pedals yet?
Maybe the crank is still workable...?!
Derailleurs are toasted and locked up. Maybe they can be refurbed? Not on my radar as I want to go single speed and gear it right. Partially why I also question the stronglight crank for gearing.
Brakes are going back on it with new Kool Stop pads.
Stronglight headset is groove/pit free and will reassemble nicely with a bit of grease and new bearings.
Stem handlebars and levers look pretty good! Maybe go low profile, probably not though.
Simplex seat post and (edit: Campagnolo skewers) MAY be rework able!
The vision is to give as much of a nod to the original design as possible while still blasting the look into the future. Im still slaving away on a 16RHR surface PREP on as many surfaces as possible! Naplex lugs will probably go back to black.
I suspect that if one does not appreciate the final product, it has more to do with their inability to appreciate their own reflection rather than the final functional form of the ride! ✌️

If you use the inner ring position, the chainline should be pretty good. And 170mm is just fine.

Yes they are Simplex and I'm not set on what I'm going to do with them...!

Current Phil Wood Spindle width: 110.5mm
Paul Comp Gear: 46T
Stronglight Gear: 45T
Rear: 18T Fixed and/or Free
I'd be interested in the OUTER Stronglight ring/crank assembly if the gearing ratio feels right around Tulsa but I suspect that would mean obtaining a new PW BB spindle? I'm assuming I'll need to measure upon installation even though both are ISO spindles?

I am also a bit curious with all those fancy more blingy parts on an old peugot frame from the dumpster seems odd but could work out ok. I am not a fan of WI or Paul cranks but not really for looks just for having proprietary chainrings rather than a standard BCD like 130 (or 110). Other than that they are swell.

Haven't worked on this for a few days and a bit of corrosion is quick to form in humid weather!
Last Dremel tool rework:
Front face: 60-grit barrel
Brazing fillets: SMALL (1/32"?) DIA cutter ball / Diamond tipped engraver
Upper / Lower Lugs: 80-grit hand sand
