i just think bad idea to put anything with weight on glass. I smacked a fly on the windshield (inside) a couple years ago and the windshield shattered while driving. Not nice.
On theatre hand, nice car. How long have you had it? I've been on the waiting list for well over a year. Probably time to order one. Worth it? Better than an S model or get a used "S"?
Crack has nothing to do with Tesla or being cheap, thin glass in my opinion. For that matter, then my Toyota Sequoia glass was cheap thin stuff too, but the truck has 320,000 miles on it and it just keeps going and going and going.......

sorry off topic!

Is the entirety of the weight of the bike solely supported by one large piece of glass like the Tesla?

I like that you now claim Tesla's glass is for sure low quality. It simply wasnt designed to hold weight or be suctioned under dynamic stress.
Plus 20.

Not on the R8, however, I use 2 bikes, so I don't know if the collective stress is the same. Sometimes I use 2 MTBs and have had no issues.

I don't understand why some people are determined to use the wrong tool for the job - and then invariably blame the tool when it doesn't work - instead of accepting the responsibility for selecting the wrong tool and the consequences.
And that right there is the proper answer.

Did Tesla replace it for you?

I just bought a SeaSucker as I thought that's what Elon recommended for Teslas. Now I am a bit worried. Did Tesla replace the glass under warranty, if not, how much was it?

Remove the space from my link below to see my review. You situation sucks, but I hope it is a fluke

That's true, but glass installers aren't subjecting their glass to the same stresses as the same glass going down the freeway at 70mph with a bike attached.

I briefly had a Sea Sucker bike rack for my Z. Great concept and likely would have worked as designed, but I just never had enough confidence in the system to use it beyond my neighborhood so I sold on eBay, the same place I found it. I kept envisioning my C50 bouncing down the interstate as I helplessly watched in my rearview mirror.

The typical back glass on a vehicle is tempered, that piece is laminated safety glass, like a windshield.

I originally got a Forrester for the all wheel drive for use in snow country but I'm very glad the bike fits inside under lock and key.

Tempered glass isn't laminated glass (they are separate properties).

Just judging by the way the crack propagated without shattering, this looks to be laminated, and it did its job. The bike didn't pop into the cabin of the car accompanied by a cloud of broken glass shards.

If it had been tempered glass overloaded like this, there would probably be a pile of glass "pellets" all over the cabin of the vehicle. The safety feature is that the pieces of glass would not have been sharp.

Could be.

The following says that tempered glass is typically used in the side and rear but the Tesla's glass roof isn't typical.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempered_glass

I was commenting on 02Giant's apparent conflation of "tempered" and "laminated".

I don't think @02Giant actually conflated them. The post said the rear glass was laminated, and not tempered.

This thread makes me glad I've been using a hitch rack for years. Works great, moves from one vehicle to another, holds up to 4 bikes, too.

Best thing I ever did was have the trailer hitch installed on my car. Had a trunk-mounted rack, but it was causing damage. Roof rack is not an option on my rag top. Getting to the ride is half the fun when I can put the top down and cruise to the Cape with the bikes on the back.

If you say so. I didn't have any problem understanding what he meant.

Most rear windows are tempered, this one is laminated wasn't exactly a hard concept. I have no idea why you read it to mean the window was both.

Yup, to and from Martha's Vineyard at least once a summer, along with numerous other trips. Never a problem, either. I even took a trip to Florida with four bikes mounted while the rack was on a Prius. Hurt the mileage, but no issues. I'll leave the sucker racks to someone else.
