I think I know what you're trying to get across here, but the way you worded it makes it seem as though carrying water bottles and repair kits are as unnecessary as extra fat. Being dehydrated with a broken bike on the side of the road isn't going to be fast nor make for a better workout.

No idea what you're talking about with tri bikes though, but that's already been called out.​​​

I don't think anyone is saying there's no significant speed costs to carrying an additional 45 pounds. There's probably 45 pounds difference between my fully loaded hauler and my old racing bikes, and I'm definitely faster on the flats with the lighter bikes. It takes a lot more energy to accelerate the heavier bike so I really can't get to and keep the same pace with the heavier bike without exhausting myself.

Statements about weight not mattering are definitely discussing much smaller differences than 45 pounds.

carrying water is a total drag. Just time the ride with areas with rain. The acid rain is sooo delic, you'd mistaken the burning esophagus for the carbonation that soda gives!

On the flats probably not too much. I've seen more than a few bigger guys that can turn a big ring.

On the climbs now...that will absolutely make a big difference.

Bay Trail also. I do a loop around the south bay, mostly on the Bay Trail. The only real rise is when I come back over the Dumbarton.

There are shorter, less brutal routes, aren't there? The hybrid won't seriously slow you down going uphill, but it might make descending Kings a little scary.

The Sequioa is a virtual event this year, called the Sequio-tual. Routes from 58-101 miles. All proceeds go to charity.

Larry, Bruce and I have used our credit card for several hundred dollars to keep up with food stop needs. Sometimes we were fully compensated, and quickly, and sometimes not. Imagine how much worse it got when we had moochers. So not funny. And sometimes the profit goes to cool stuff like Rails to Trails.

Obviously, it's a fund-raiser first and foremost. I tend to agree with your basic sentiment, though. If they want you to ride, make it reasonably-priced because they're in competition with other rides that are.OTOH, if they just want your money, then ASK FOR DONATIONS. Hosting a ride costs money, and that's money spent on the ride instead of on the charity. It's the same issue I always had with United Way: If I want my money to go to a charity, I give to the charity. If I give to United Way, some of my donation gets sucked up for their administrative costs and the charity gets less.

I led a ride for a local cycling club a few years back. There were about 10 of us with many years of experience. We all trusted each other implicitly since we had ridden together for three years . We ran pacelines on each ride and everyone acted responsibly and was super safe. On one ride a guy we passed at the beginning decides to jump on the back. I invited him to find his own group and he invited to go f myself. We couldn’t shake the guy and he hung with us for 45 miles just drafting off the back. We did a long downhill and he takes the middle of the lane blocking 45 MPH traffic while the rest of us are single file on the shoulder. I told him to get on the shoulder and he gave me the same invitation. The dude would not leave and just gave us a rash.

I noticed he had no tools unlike us. But then we also had the mantra, no man left behind. At about mile 50 with 20 to go, his rear tire blows and off he goes to the shoulder yelling for help. No one looked at him or gave him another thought as we powered on. If there was ever ‘just desserts’ he sure got it.
