Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pfft. You should see MLK Drive. There are far more people out than there would be normally. Lots more kids, too. Guess with no little league and soccer the parents have to find something for them to do. The interesting thing is that the lack of tourists means no line to get a photo with the Rocky statue.

I went out to the desert. I only encountered one cyclist. We didn't come within 12' of each other. There was also a SxS, which stayed at least 20' away.

I see Arbys has Coke Floats for a buck. All the shortcake in Pennsylvania wouldn't allow datlas to outfat me this summer!

I haven’t used a single day of my vacation days year to date.

What’s worse, our company does not allow vacation day roll overs. Nope, not a single day.

I think I’ve used one of 25. I also think we can roll over 5. Now that private campgrounds in PA can open I may try to take a long weekend soon. I know a place that is mostly seasonal campers with trailers. Plenty of room to distance. I’ve stayed there numerous nights and have encountered other people in the restroom maybe twice. The owner is a nice guy. Charges cyclists only $10/night. The first time I stayed there he offered me a beer.

We have an “eat what you kill” model for work. Take as much or as little vacation as you want. But even if you are gone you still have to pay full share of expenses (rent, staff salaries, etc.) so vacations are quite costly. I usually take 1 week in the summer and that’s about it. Last year I was decadent and took 1 week off in the summer and also the week of Thanksgiving (which was our Spain trip), so far no vacation this year, maybe a week in late August to take Heidi to USC (if they even have an on campus fall semester).

No, nor carry any over. Very frustrating, but it's a highly conservative multinational that isn't convinced there's a way to accomplish that while adhering to all the laws, so they just forbid it. Others manage, of course.

I don't remember who brought up Waterford a few days ago, but I wore this on today's ride:

Why do I own a Waterford jersey, you ask? Because Waterford made recumbent frames back when I was forced onto a bent 2003 and I owned one. It was sold under the Volae label but was a Waterford through and through.

They make the Milwaukee Mettle bike I mentioned might be my next. Nice jersey! Never heard a bad thing about their bikes.

I’ve always liked their lettering. Co-Motion as well.

our vacations don’t roll over either, but we usually can sell them back. And if the time is right when you sell it back you can sometimes make triple what it is worth.

The mileage allowance on my car lease averages out to 1,000 per month. After 8 months I'm 3,000 short of my normal mileage at this time.. I'm going to have a lot of miles to abuse once this thing is over. Maybe a road trip to California.

I haven't really had a vacation of any sort in 2 years. Last year was a total nightmare. This year (even with Covid) I feel far more relaxed. Even a staycation would be OK as long as I can get out to do all the hiking/biking I want.

Yup. Which, for us, means that if we don't take ours it's basically wage theft. Eff that. So well all take it in the last quarter of the year.

Man. What is with the wind lately? Weather guesser said 5 to 10 mph. I rode in 15 to 20 mph head winds again today. At one point I was cursing out loud going 12 mph.
I finally put my camera on the bike today. So of course I didnt need it. Which is ok.
Good ride all things considered.
