The crankset options are 52-36, 50-34, 54-40 for D/A, and 50-34 and 52-36 for Ultegra.
Sigh. I suspect that many riders are like me, and would prefer to have something like the 48-31 that you can get with GRX.

Chainline was goofed up and had to remove the rings I'd purchased.
Yes... I'd like to have seen R8100 offer something smaller than 34. I do wonder if the new R8100 retained the 110bcd that makes it so difficult to add smaller rings.

I tried to go 46/30 using the R8000 cranks, because of my built-in Stages power meter.

Even on a road bike, I would prefer (at age 58, and living in a VERY hilly area) something smaller than a 34...And I have no use for a 50. 'Course, I suppose I can always run GRX on a road bike - what's to stop me?

I've seen it mentioned that you also have to adopt the GRX Front Derailleur due to this 2.5mm.
I was stuck with my Ultegra Di2 FD and it would not accommodate the 2.5mm difference.
So there you go.... that'll stop yer if you're running Di2

The rings I purchased pushed the chainline outboard by 2.5mm. I believe the GRX cranks do the same.
I've seen it mentioned that you also have to adopt the GRX Front Derailleur due to this 2.5mm.
I was stuck with my Ultegra Di2 FD and it would not accommodate the 2.5mm difference.
So there you go.... that'll stop yer if you're running Di2

Did the switch on what was originally a 53/39, 11-23 9 speed crit bike (1999 Peloton) and is now a GRX 46/30 12-27 10 speed much friendlier road bike.
No complaints. At 57 y/o and 200+lbs I needed a break from grinding.

Yawn...seriously, I don't care, I want just bike parts and bikes to be available in mass quantity so we can get our customers who have been waiting months their bikes and I can stay employed at my shop. 12 speed is cool don't get me wrong but I really just want a bunch of Deore and 105 stuff (or one below those) to come out en masse equipped on bikes that are coming to our shop.
If we weren't in the middle of whatever COVID wave this is now and COVID weren't a political issue for some beyond dumb reason then this would be cool but the fact I can barely get parts and bikes and am telling people it could be a over 6 months to get the bike they want or sometimes any halfway decent bike is freakin' ridiculous.

My recent bike (used) had 6800 10sp and I could not buy parts without going to eBay.
My current bike (used) has 8000 and will be going the same way for parts availability.
I’ve been waiting for a new groupset release, so as to maximize the supported life of a new bike.
I haven’t had a new road bike in 40years, I can’t afford to buy one very often!
Last one is a Holdsworth Special, and I still have it.

To use a 48/31, all it takes is some spacing washers to correct the chainline. I use the 48/31 with my sram force axs 12 speed drivetrains and force axs chains. I just ordered an XT 12 speed chain to try.

I used to buy only Dura Ace until about 15 years ago. Now it's so expensive that I don't even research the new stuff. And since Ultegra will only be electronic and no lower priced mechanical option the same will apply to that. At this rate, one of these days I'll only be looking at Claris.

The hoods still look Shimano uncomfortable but I'm not really their target market either so..
