Centurion Ironman Treasure Trove
Was just checking out Ironman prices on ebay when I saw this. Check it out:

I'm always amazed when somebody has a stash of brand new 30 year old bicycles.

It's rare to see these little stashes of old bikes. But, I know there are plenty more of them around somewhere. Interest in racing style bikes began to dry up in the late 80's when the mountain bike craze began. Prices started to jump up on Japanese stuff around that stretch of time too. I guess $850 is probably a pretty good deal for a brand new mint condition Ironman. I would love to put one of those boxes under a Christmas tree for somebody special. I'd love to be there when somebody opens one of those boxes.

I'm really tempted to fly up to Rhode Island and check these out. With cash in hand.

While he certainly had some new old stock bikes, I met a bike shop owner who had stored NOS components in the attic. I asked him how much he had and for examples. He was too embarassed to give an amount but he said he had first gen. Dura Ace on through 8 speed and 600 Tri-Color groupsets. A lot of them. He had tons of Campy grouppos too. These guys are still out there.

Did anyone ever go up and look into this trove? Buy one on eBay?

The bottom row -- those are all model and serial numbers of mid-'80s Treks.
IIRC, the eBay listing closed just shortly after it was posted here.
