Raleigh Super Course Pickup
Picked up this Super Course for $100 today. I believe an ‘83?
Seat post and stem are both free (though the stem took a couple whacks to the bolt to give itself up.)

Nice! I’ve got an 83 too and I like it quite a lot. Yours looks like it’ll be in great condition after you clean it up and replace those crispy tires and lever hoods. Did you get anything nice from that tool bag under the saddle? Bonus that it’s been upgraded with Suntour cyclone.

Just a couple tire levers and a tube. I know the catalog was pretty vague, but the SR crank/Nitto Pearl stem and Olympiade bars seemed nice for the level of bike. Done after the fact like the Cyclone?
I may have to pull a cyclone front out of the bin.

Stripped down (and mostly clean):
Some minor scapes and chips, and some decal damage from the zip tied pump.
Stamped steerer tube:

Keep - cyclone front, nicer brakes, better shift levers, probably a 700c wheelset I have around.
Sell - pull the stem/handlebar and cyclone, swap with some spares from here, slap some on paselas.
Ahh nice.

I’ll be picking up a new headset for it. Hopefully Velomine is open tomorrow and I can run over and grab one.
It and the bottom bracket appear to have been last serviced with used motor oil. Headset was also tightened with the force of giant.

I believe (and someone will correct me) that 555 was just Japanese Tange tubing that Raleigh named "555", so that people would think, "Hmm, this must be just like Reynolds 531 ... only betterer." And it might have been, I have never ridden it. The Japanese steel bikes of that era were really top notch, so I don't think you can go wrong there.

There's a matching mixte on ebay. Maybe you could breed them.
