I used to cop them a bit when I was walking in the morning, most were just happy drunks staggering home, or somewhere, occasionally it was a car full of yahoos. Being on a bike presents a different target for some of these idiots and I am usually not fanatical enough about my riding to go out and risk it but I've got a busy day ahead of me installing solar panels so I needed to be limber. I hope it worked!

I don't ride on the roads very much any more, I ride on the MUPs and they seem safe enough to avoid drunk drivers. When I did ride on the roads, my rule was to not ride on Fridays after work, too many drunk drivers. In fact one time I was eating at a restaurant and the was a loud boom at the restaurant, a drunk had run into a parked pickup truck, there was enough force that it ripped the bed off the truck. That event reassured me that I made the right decision about riding on Fridays.

cell phones are worse than alcohol. So many things to worry about in traffic. I do try to use dedicated bike lanes or MUP as much as possible now days.

Back when I made my rule about riding on Fridays, cell phones weren't common. I agree that distracted drivers are a real problem now, and I mainly ride on MUPs now. I want a real barrier between and cars, not just a white line

Agreed. Heat came early this year and it has been windy for weeks. Although the breeze can be nice, in really hot weather it feels more like having a hair dryer pointed at you running at high heat. This is why I start my commute before sunrise so I have at least one leg of the commute in "cooler" weather.

Thankfully drunk drivers are not a huge concern here, we still have them but not so much in my area. When I mentioned drunks I was talking about the walking ones. My route takes me past a few different places where parties are likely to happen, the kind of parties that are still going at 4am and everyone is either drunk or passed out. Passed out is good for me, but those drunks walking home, or just being idiots are potentially a huge problem for a cyclist. When I was driving the truck I used to have drunk idiots from pubs trying to jump on the bullbar, or even the rear of the truck as I pulled up and lights or at service stations, even had the idiots who would stand in the middle of the road at a green light trying to stop the truck like Superman. But when I've been walking or riding I've had them approach me, I've even seen them throw stuff like empty bottles at cars. To be fair it doesn't happen often and some drunks are cheerful people, but I just don't like the thought of riding along in the dark and being hit by a flying glass bottle because some drunk thinks it's funny.

Weather has been so bad here the last week that I haven't been able to get outside on the bike. High winds, pouring rain, hail, we've had a good dose of it this week and it doesn't look like it will be easing until at least Friday so I'm glad I didn't make a May goal because I'd probably feel pressure to keep it even after missing nearly a week of riding.

I just realized two days ago marked 4 full years since I started riding. I somehow managed to cover almost 32,000 miles in that time. I would have never thought that was possible thinking back to my first few rides.

Had planned to have a higher number this week, but decided to catch up on house chores and whatnot because I'm going down to Maryland tonight to try riding the GAP. Will be pushing off tomorrow early to try and get through the Continental Divide climb before the heat wave. If I make it to Pittsburgh, I'll have over 200 for the month.

Planning on:
Cumberland -> Rockwood
Rockwood -> Connellsville
Connellsville -> Pittsburgh

Wish me luck.

The butterfly (i.e doesn't go out in the wind or rain), finally got out on the bike this morning. It's been 7 days since I last rode because of high winds and rains and it didn't feel too bad. It was 10C with 4km wind and very pleasnt. I got some new full length gloves which felt comfortable, I also found some clear safety glasses which made a huge difference to the eyes on those speedier runs. Good thing I don't care what I look like out there because both the bright yellow gloves and the glasses will be part on my winter kit from now on.

Its also the first time I've ridden with the new smart watch. I think I stuffed something up in the settings because it thought I was doing an indoor ride, but it's interested seeing the data it records. Apparently I spent 75 of the 88 minutes doing anaerobic exercise, I had to look that one up to see if that was good or bad. I guess I really didn't know what my max heart rate was going to be but for some reason I was surprised that it was only 150bpm, I was further surprised that it didn't tell me I was dead on some of the hills. The one thing I do have to change is the voice prompt, it's annoying riding around in the darkness with no other sounds around and some dude calls out, "You've been training for x minutes and your heart rate is x beats per minute."

Today 29.1km

Not a good week with work and weather. Should be able to ride Friday, not sure if I'll do Sunday, it's supposed to be in the upper 90's. I ride in that during the summer, but a bit early for this weather.

Thankfully though it's dry so there wont be any ice around and it never snows here.

So much for Bike to Work Week. Life got in the way and I had to drive to work Thursday and Friday, and with so much going on, I didn't even get to post Wednesday's ride until now. Still have a chance to do another 110.2 miles in a week and a half, but if current trends continue, it's going to be a challenge.

My watch and my phone argued about the distance this morning, they were too far different, only a few hundred metres over 29kms but still interesting to see the difference.
Was 0 degrees when I went out and when I got back 1 hours and 23 minutes later the fog was beginning to fall. I'm glad I beat the because the last few days it's been a very wet fog the last few mornings.
Long sleeves do feel a bit different. I'm not a long sleeve person in general, I hate wearing jumpers and jackets even during winter, but riding with long sleeves doesn't feel too bad and I didn't get to hot.

Today 29.1km
MTD 262.8km

153 miles during my just-completed, three-day, unsupported tour. Up to about 400 miles of touring so far this year.
