Head Badge on 80's Trek

I've got an early 80's 412, the paint is pretty decent but the head badge looks like it's been stuffed up somebody's butt. I think it's brass and I'm looking to clean it up but I don't want to make it worse. Any thoughts on how I would go about this? Thanks in advance!

Somebody's? Perhaps if we knew more specifically who's behind. Actually a pic would be great.

Will post a pic at 10, until then I can describe it. The Trek head badges that I see online are gold with black accent paint. Mine is a cross between the color of butterscotch pudding and diarrhea toilet bowl water. I'm afraid if put a brass cleaner on it will f'up the paint. Hoping somebody here has been down this road before.

Well if it’s this one, here is my before and after pic, just used Mothers metal polish, but would also have used Quick-Glo, or Brasso. It’s a pretty tough badge, you aren’t going to damage it with any of those.

Have you tried already cleaning it with WD-40?

Thanks for the input everyone, I did the ketchup trick and it worked in several tiny spots. I believe one of the previous owners did a less than professional repaint on the black and then did a clear coat that is now flaking. Going forward with this ugly hunk of metal I'm going to take the advice of the great singer Morrissey when he crooned, "If you don't like me, don't look at me."

The good thing is that head badges are hard to see when riding. In my life f riding I have exactly zero memories of ever seeing mine.

I just checked out a headbadge on a bike the other day when I was out riding as I was surprised to see a bike with thin steel tubes and a headbadge! Fujis have a distinctive badge which helps. Agreed it is not something that you normally look at out riding but for an owner its kind of a big deal.

You don't need 10 posts to upload photos. They will upload to your gallery album at https://www.bikeforums.net/g/user/545904 Once that's done, a forum member can access them and assist by posting them in this thread, on your behalf.
