Cycle NC Day 1

I’ve missed doing the supported week long tours since COVID canceled a lot of those I normally do. But I’m riding in my home state this week with my brother who just retired.

Day 1 Cycle NC done. 55 miles from Sparta to Mt Airy. A couple of steep but short climbs along with several screaming descents. I have done zero climbing this year but it was actually nice to climb a few hills.

Tons of food trucks and people in downtown Mt Airy this afternoon but Snappys Lunch and Olde North State are closed…..

My brother and me. He’s 12 years younger but indirectly got me riding about 20 years ago.

Nice sunrise to start the week.

What is this????

Great views today.

The vineyard

Day 1 done!!

Rest stop #2

That part of the state is beautiful, I rode up around Boone this past spring. The terrain is great but it was dangerous as hell with the traffic, narrow lanes and small shoulders.

"What is this?" is a Veloquad. It is a 4-wheeled velomobile. The advantage of 4 wheels is stability - a rear blowout won't cause a crash. Not quite as fast as a 3-wheeler but still quite fast enough! A friend of mine has a Quest velomobile, which has 3 wheels. He has done timed centuries at 28 mph.
