Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

I've gone up to 42mm on the trek hybrids, no problem - could probably push it even higher if that's your thing!

I've almost finished my neo-retro gravel bike … just haven’t wrapped the bars yet as I think I’m going to swap for a bit wider, more flare, gravel-oriented. Starting from my craigslist bought (in 2008?) early 80s Dawes Galaxy with 531 tubing that was my first road bike and always a really sweet frame, added 9spd mtn (shimano deore) cassette and derailleur, 9 spd road brifter but retained the original crankset and front derailleur (w/ downtube shifter), some 33c cyclocross tires set up tubeless on modern 700c wheels... It rides so beautifully now - I can't wait to post some pictures (I guess I haven't posted enough here yet).

Sounds awesome, can't wait to see it. Out of curiosity is that the widest tire it will fit or a matter of personal preference?

Hi Frkl - I originally had 38c tires on there (just some old hybrid tires I had to start with, but not very knobby) ... probaby could get away with 40c, depending on the profile and tread.

New Bike Day. Felt Broam 30. Wasn't really at the top of my wish list. But I needed something $2k-ish, it was available in my size, and I got a great deal on it. I'm sure it will give me plenty of fun as it mutates and eventually becomes a donor to the next steed.

Here she is - Dawes Galaxy (1981?) - reynolds 531 DB main tubes, updated with mountain 9spd cassette and RD, 9spd brifter, 700c 19mm wheels, new long-reach brakes, etc. No bar wrap yet - I'm going to add wider, more-flared bars first! ... a few other changes as well - new saddle, pedals and seatpost. But happy with how it's turned out so far!

tubeless tires - able to run psi down in the 20s, which is really nice for traction and damping on rough stuff

(don't actually ride on the tracks, just using this as a prop)

Here's one I've been working on--a 1998 Salsa La Cruz (December 1998, just a couple of months before Ross Shafer officially left). The fork is DB 531; I'm not sure about the body (it wasn't listed in Ross's SN book). I found it on Craigslist in Chicago while I was there visiting family, built up like a road racer...I've been slowly rebuilding as a gravel/all-road/adventure 1x. The most recent additions were just yesterday with the XTR rear derailleur and the 1st-gen XT pedals.

That derailleur works with a 42T cog? I think the M900 is rated for 32T max, but I've run it with a 34T.

Cool bike by the way.

Edit: Oops, see now that you added an extension

Yeah--the WolfTooth road link gets it to a 42T cassette. And thanks! It's definitely one of my favorites

Here is my 1990 Bianchi Tangent. Built up from a frameset, started life with me as a flat bar, but converted to drops once I got the parts.

I might try these - wide with some flare and only 80mm drop:

Or, if you are looking for some rise (30mm) with shallow drop with flare:

Did you cold set the rear or just squeeze the hub in? I remember the first time I set the spacing, it was a bit nerve wracking.

Is the derailleur clamp on tue drive side modified into a housing stop?

I cold set it, yes - and it was nerve-wracking! (but slowly and incrementally, checking with the caliper after each effort I got it to 130mm, symmetrically spaced) ... I did try squeezing the hub in at first, but it was so tight I knew I wouldn't want to be doing that every time I needed to change a tire, etc.

The downtube shifter on the drive side has been modified into a housing stop (I think that's what you meant?)

Thanks for those suggestions! I like the Ritchey beacons, but the Surly truck stops are an interesting choice as well - great to have a few good options!

This is a 2021 Salsa Warbird 600 that I bought on 12/18/21. I've done these mods: Redshift ShockStop stem, Ritchey Comp Ergomax handlebars, Selle TMP SRK saddle, Roval Terra C wheels w/WTB Raddler 44 tires. This replaces a great Soma Double Cross that I’ve ridden for over 3,100 miles (and still own). The disc brakes on the Warbird are amazing! Loving the Warbird so far and looking forward to many miles together!

Nice build! Did you purchase this bike complete (and then customize) or purchase as frameset + wheels only from Bikes Direct? Awhile back I was eyeballing this frame for a build, but ended up going with something else. Though I still like balance of Reynolds steel, with modern touches like the flat mount brake setup, tapered headset and front/rear thru-axle.

Thanks, I bought the frame and fork from another bikeforums member. Nothing original really, just built it up with stuff from all over.
Bought the cheap Sensah groupset to try. If I keep it long term I might upgrade that eventually.
Went with mech disk brakes Spyre SLC, as I really don't like hydraulics.
I bought it because I liked the steel and the color.

I finally dialed in my Poseidon X running the GRX400 10 speed groupset with hydraulic brakes. Took me awhile to get it to ride smooth, but now it rolls like butter.
