Decided to take my first night ride in over a month, and took to the New River Trail for the first time since The Incident. Because I'm still admittedly wary of the place, particularly the southern end, I only covered around 2/3rds of the route; perhaps 20 miles in total. Still, nice to be out in cooler air - but damn, dodging the rabbits was pretty dicey last night! One of them had a guardian angel looking out for him - went between my front and rear wheel without getting run over!

But the coolest thing was coming across another snake taking up half the width of the path. My light picked him up at the last second, even as I was moving rather slowly, and I safely passed what I thought was the head-end ofa bull/gopher snake. I stopped and turned around with the intention of removing what I believed was a non-poisonous snake from the trail; as I got closer and put my light on him, I heard the telltale buzz of a rattler. It hadn't been the head-end of a bull/gopher snake I'd passed - it was the tail-end of another rattlesnake (good for me!). This one was a little over 2' long, and had maybe 5/6 segments on it's rattle. I got a couple crappy pics for y'all right here:

Hard-Pack Double-Track With Cheese!

I recently discovered some very nice Wisconsin cheeses from a company called Wood River Creamery at my local grocer. However, as often happens these days, once I discovered it, so did everyone else, and suddenly they can't keep it on the shelves. What to do?

"Go to The Source!", said the voice in my head.

"Cady Cheese Store.", said The Google.

Yes, of course... and Captain Willard said, "I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one...".

When you are on a Quest for Cheese, it is best to ride French. Don't ask me why; I don't think I could tell you. But I know... I just know.

Hard-pack double-track under a cathedral of trees. This is cheese country religion right here.

After a long drive and a short ride, we (Betty Bleu and I) arrived at la source du fromage sacré:

Today I selected Cheddar-Gruyere in the Chipotle-Garlic, and Herbes de Provence varieties.

Then I placed an order for Mrs. C - Bloody Mary Curds, and in my best Terminator impression, I said, "I'll be back.".

Excellent morning ride on our newest section of the Schuylkill River Trail - East Coventry to Phoenixville, RT. I noticed this well reflected spot on the Schuylkill Canal that reminded me of some of the nice fishing villages northbend sees out his end of the continent. Except this is in sleepy Montclair, PA. Oh, and a gratuitous shot of my old bike that "time forgot and the decades cannot improve"*.

The route did include a climb of Tunnel Hill (12 - 14% gradient) twice (out and back) with my meager 40-28 low gear combo, and I made em without walking. I'll just feel good about that, don't ya know.

No beautiful shots today. Headed out with the temp around 49 which was fortunate because it made me slip on my wool baselayer shirt. We've had rain all week so I checked three different local weather sources right before I left. No chance of rain until around 3 PM. It was only about 9:30 so I'm safe right?

This creek has been dry for weeks, good to see it running again.

Eleven more miles of cold rain until I got home. Bike soaking wet and covered with grit, same as I was. Oh and as much as I love Veloflex tires the Corsa Race's get really squirrelly on wet pavement. Even with avoiding any painted lines.

The graph shows when I picked up speed to try and beat the rain and then when I had to slow after having the tires break loose on me a few times. It was fun yet not, LOL!

Always grateful to post this thread…..

…and especially in wool jersey season.

Today I rode in the autumn air

And without a visual, , my legs felt very vintagy.

The vineyard owner is hoping for sunny warm weather, but may not get enough.

A lot of work each year, some for naught in western WA USA

Maybe a coat of shellac to deepen the yellow?

Is heroic a state of your mind?

Finally some cooler weather. We've had a long run of hot days, with highs of 100-114° and lows in the mid-70s. Today's low was around 60° and a high in the mid 80s, nice weather for a 62 miler to the back side of Millerton Lake.

A much nicer day out today. Low 50s, clear and beautiful. Took out the Guv'nor and just enjoyed the morning with a lot of picture taking.

You guys are posting some stellar photos and ride accounts.

I really enjoy seeing and reading them.

Today's ride was a bit of a tour around downtown Dallas,TX.

This movable piece of art is pretty cool. It wasn't moving today or I would not have put my Austro Daimler in it's path for a pic.

Drover.

What big horns you have sir! This entire cattle drive scuplture area is impressive I think. There are 3 cowboy drovers and 49 longhorns strung out along a water way. All are larger than life size with remarkable attention to detail.

Old Pegasus.

From atop 'triple overpass. Old Texas School Book Depository in background.

It's quite fun and surprisingly fast. The 3 speed doesn't really give me the gearing I'd like with the road turns uphill but otherwise it's great. Did 27 miles on it this morning but in the past have gone much farther is great comfort. It's just a fun ride to take out to enjoy the experience instead of worrying about the workout.

While looking at the photo above, I made out a strange white mark in the middle lane of Elm which looked out of place (just left of the streetlight). Looked up Dealey Plaza on Google Earth and realized it's a painted X, marking the spot where JFK was hit by the final shot. There are two more painted X's in the same lane, closer to the Book Depository, which represent the location where the first two shots hit. On Street View they appear as though they've been maintained for quite some number of years. I can also make out plaques alongside Elm which I assume contain details of the assassination, which is understandable, but damn - X marks the spot?

Anyway. Thanks for these photos - I'd never heard of the Drover/Longhorn sculptures, and that movable drill-bit art installation is definitely a one-of-a-kind thing I can get behind

Rode 62 miles north. Had to deal with traffic from the North Shore Century and with a 5-mile chunk of Sheridan Road closed for the North Shore Triathlon. Real planning genius at work.

The fun started when I got to Sheridan. Cop told me it was closed for the Triathlon. I though I found an alternate route, but somehow I ended up on the bike course. Passed a few riders On $5K bikes who were on the aero bars doing 8 mph. I shouldn’t tease, you should see me run. Kept my head down an got some cheers. Was worried about getting cited for “parading without a permit”.

The NS Century was using my usual water stop so I had to stop at Northcroft Park. I saw a bundle of “Franklins” on the sidewalk and thought I was rich.

Turned out to be a different type of “Good News”…

The corner at Everett and St. Mary’s. Shady and beautiful.

Habitat restoration at Capt. Dan Wright Woods. Also shady and beautiful.

The sign says it all!

Starting to get some fall color (and smells)

Crossing the Des Plaines River. The pines look stressed.

Finally got the Rodriguez fitted to my body and out for a few miles. I like it, but the fork has to go. Too stiff and I'd just as soon have a threaded setup.
