Yellowstone Park roads opened for bikes this past weekend and won’t open for vehicle traffic for a couple more weeks. Rode with my BIL on his new Lynskey out and back from Mammoth Hot springs to Norris Basin. Perfect weather for my first ride of the year. Best time to ride in the Park.

Been a while since a nice early morning ride (my favorite). Love the colors in the sky pre-sunrise. My usual route over to Chatfield State Park, lucky that this picture location is about 5.5 miles from my front door.

I won’t go so far as to say warmer today but it was less cold. I did an all hills route within the confines of my little town, putting in 15 miles with 1800 feet of climbing.
Cima Coppi at one my usual spots today, top of Observatory Hill at 850 feet. Low point (Punto Cipollini?) was at the Rivanna River at 350 with lots of up and down between.

A stop in Crockett, CA, also known as Sugar City, home to C in C&H. A banner on the pole sports a mountain bike. The Crockett Hills trail has become a favorite for many local riders. Old and new bridges on the Carquinez straight.

After 24 hours of rain - some really heavy stuff Monday night - it was back to sun and fun of the two-wheeled kind.
Meandered over to the old neighborhood and surrounding environs and waxed nostalgic for a couple/three hours.

Back in my sailor days, the Carquinez Strait bridge was the trickiest bit navigating home to Concord from sea, and that of course, includes the Golden Gate. It was very narrow clearance, width and height, for my fat ammo ship squeezing through that bridge. I remember the big C+H sign by the bridge (different one) heading to work at the ship in Vallejo when we were parked there.

Petaluma, California was the egg capital of the west in the early years of the 20th century. Today I decided to visit three of the brick hatcheries that were active at that time. This one is now a collection of small shops.
Another, just down the street, has been vacant for a while.
The "Must Hatch" hatchery is the most impressive of the bunch. Built in 1927 to replace an earlier structure that burned, its owners bragged that it was the largest hatchery in the world. At it's peak it was said to hatch 1.8 million chicks a day! I find that number difficult to believe since the population of California at the time was only around 5 million. Maybe my doubts are misplaced and everyone ate a heck of a lot of chicken back then.
It seemed only right to ride the Bruce Gordon today since Bruce lived and worked in Petaluma for many years. In fact he built my frame there. Petaluma's other claim to bicycling fame is that Ross Shafer founded Salsa Cycles there. Ross and Bruce had adjoining shops for several years.

As of lately, I have been trying to run errands on my bike. Anything within a ten mile radius. Should have been doing this all along...
Today it was car parts. The local parts house didn't have what I needed. I rode to their nearest location that stocked my parts.

Built for Speed, Petaluma Ca! The decal is a bit worn, but the bike is great. A Soulcraft Groundskeeper built by Sean Walling in Ross Schafer’s old barn. Sean and Matt worked for Salsa before they sold to QBP.

Here are a few photos from yesterday's ride. A total of 38 miles and 4100' climbing. I did "the Bears Loop" a popular ride in the East Bay Hills that circles around the San Pablo Reservoir and includes a few modest climbs (Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear). It's almost 10 miles from my house up & over the Berkeley Hills into Tilden before starting the loop around the reservoir, so my ride profile looked like a balloon on a string.
Here's a photo about mid-way up Papa Bear, looking back toward the reservoir.
I don't take many selfies, but here's one:

One from behind the bars (just noticing: the rear brake cable is usually on the other side of the stem)
More open landscapes not far from the urban setting. We got a little bit of rain on Monday, the first in a while. It won't be long before these hills are all brown again.

It's getting hotter 'round these parts. Next week I'll need to leave earlier in the day, and probably begin using my Camelbak again, too.
A quick 40 today on some local back roads and parts of the trail:
Just at the halfway point (where I took the second photo), a couple with electric bikes were checking out a shoulder bag left on a bench. They wondered if I thought it might belong to another couple that had gone past in the opposite direction about 5 minutes prior. I offered to take the bag and set off to catch up to them to find out; long story short, I caught them, the bag was theirs, and they were happy to get it back. The dude was retired USAF - had also done 4 years in the USN - so we chatted for a few before parting ways. Felt good to be able to use my speed and endurance to give someone a helping hand

Another cool day here with too much wind. I've been slugging it out with the wind on every ride here lately and I just didn't feel like it today. So I hoped on the Guv'nor today and just cruised around a bit vs doing a real ride on one of the road bikes.

Just a quick 20ish miles. I stopped by my school and watered out class garden. We planted Spring seeds and school is closed this week, so I wanted to make sure they got a little water to start sprouting. Then I hit a little short dirt path connecting back to roads and nearby Tilden park, before heading back down the hill and home. I've been trying to get in some miles on the Colnago in preparation for Eroica. I think I've got the bike close to dialed in. I need to tilt the saddle nose up just a wee smidge, and I might try to see about a 30-tooth inner chainring (currently set up with a 32t).
(Still have to move that rear brake cable over)

Nothing special today. The wind is howling outside again. But today is the first official ride after prostate cancer surgery on January 4th. Had to wait 3 months before riding. That timeframe was up yesterday.
So, despite the weather, today was a "break in" ride on the recently completed Colnago. The forecast looks like an outside ride tomorrow
