The past couple of years I have been so focused on 'keeping something going' WRT exercise and various arthritic issues, that I over-looked what my overwhelming goal has been since returning to cycling in 2013'ish. This goal is best expressed by the following equation where
M = average miles ridden per week the last couple of months
W = my weight in pounds
W = 215 - 0.4*M (where at 5' 9" height, 215 pounds is not a good place to be)
I generally manage something around 125 to 150 miles per week these days.

Having my second childhood on my bikes. Love to ride and try to ride like I did when I was 10. Every curb or rock is a jump. Every distraction is a new adventure. Ride most every day unless skiing is good.

I think it's a good question, but the concept of a specific "end goal" is not why I think the vast majority of people ride. I have several cycling "goals" and they are all effectively endless:-
1. Have fun
2. Reduce stress
3. Maintain fitness, weight
4. Socialize with like-minded friends
5. Compete (against myself and peer group)
I would guess 99% of people here have similar broad, open-ended goals, whether competitive or not.

My goal is to just ride and get exercise with the bonus of it being outdoors. Only exercise I actually enjoy besides walking.
This winter is gonna be my first one cycling. I'll just adapt.
