700c 25 mm road tire recommendations?

recommendations? The frame is my Monostrut Mondonico from 2005. I'm pretty sure 25 mm, maybe 26, is the biggest I can fit. I hope to do some rural road rides in the next few weeks, and currently I have 21 mm Wolber clinchers on it - can you say "Disco Era?" Rims are Mavic Open Pro.

I'm a big fan of my Continental 5000 in 700x25. Ride well, handle well, and our chip seal roads haven't killed them.

Any decent 25mm clincher would be a nice upgrade from 21mm Wolbers for rough roads. I would suggest a high thread count “open tubular” type tire from Challenge, Veloflex or Vittoria combined with latex inner tubes for a super great ride. Challenge Strada 320’s don’t have the great reputation that Continental GP 5000’s do but I for one have great fun with a tire like the Challenge when fitted with the latex inner tube and then I lower the pressures slightly for comfort and grip on our partial chip seal roads where I ride. Bike24.com in Germany has great prices on Challenge tires, or Veloflex.it sells their tires direct from their site. I got 25% off at Veloflex for my first order. If you do go with an open tubular, you might not want to use the old standby Velox rim tape. It is a bit too thick and makes mounting the open tubulars a pain. 2 layers of tubeless tape to fit the interior of your Open Pro rims will be better and permit tire lever free mounting to avoid pinch flats upon installation.

Im still wearing out my GP4000s but they will be replaced with GP5000s. My 3 non tubular bikes have 23s, 25s, 28s.

I've used GP4000 Contis, Veloflex Master, and Vittoria Corsa CX in 25. They all perform on par with each other in my experience. A few years ago it was easy to find the Veloflex and Vittoria tires for around $30-35, and those were available in tan wall.

This spring I bought a pair of 28mm American Classic tires from Amazon for about sixty bucks total. Thomas rode them 110 miles of mostly gravel at Cino, with zero issues. They have 25mm also. He's put 300-350 miles on them and has no complaints.

All my friends praise GP5000's. It is well reviewed everywhere. It's Made in Germany I think. I'd buy GP5000 personally if money is not an issue.

Again, GP5000 or Gatorskins. Both solid.

Fwiw, I've been riding the GP5000 in 700 x 32mm. Very nice tires! Some years back, I had a set of Vittoria Open Corsa CX tires in 25c. They rode great--for a short while until I sustained a fatal sidewall gash from a glancing blow while running over a rock. Delicate!

Panaracer GK 26mm slicks are very nice riding, and IME, good flat protection and durable. I have not tried them in 25mm, but, the latest Vittoria Rubino Pro G2 clincher is also a very nice riding tire, good price, but I cannot comment on longevity. I have few hundred miles on them, tread shows they have been ridden, but nothing it indicate short tread life. The latest Zaffiro Pro is a nice, lower cost alternative. Jenson has the 30mm on sale at $18, all other sizes, IIRC, are $32. I had a version of these a long time ago, they had a rough ride and wore out pretty quick. I have only one ride on the new 30mm and was pleasantly surprised at how well they rode. If they last 1500-2000 miles, pretty good deal for $18.

conti 5000. but I have been impressed with the gravel kings recently (put a set on as I had them after I got a nonfixable cut in the conti5000) ( I ride in 28mm at 229 lbs)

I agree those are nice. Do you find that they run big? Seems like the ones I had were more like 27/28, which comports with at least one review I read. Fine by me but be careful if you have a tight frame.

Any love for the Rene Herse Cayuse Pass, 700 x 26 mm? I haven't bought them but LBS has some.

I have an unused set of GP4000 and of Michelin Pro4 in 28 mm, but they are too wide - bought for a tandem project! My Trek 610 has a set of Challenge Strada Bianca marked 27 mm which have stretched out to 29 on CR-18 rims, but obviously too big.

Challenge Strada Pro or Veloflex EVO. I used to ride Veloflex Master but they were replaced with the EVO line. I've moved more toward Challenge lately. Both are handmade tires and ride really well.

Conti GP 5000 come in cream sidewall in the 25mm size. It used to be called the TDF version, not sure if that is still the model or not. Either way, that would be my first pick.

American Classice was nentioned and are a low cost good quality option, though they run undersized. I bought 28mm that run 26 actual on 17mm internal rims. They aren't as nice as the GP 5000, but cost a little more than half as much.

GP5000 700x25 cream sidewall

mounted on the Omega 19 rims @ 100 psi they actually measure less than 25mm

I have Mavic Open Pro Ceramic rims. I switch back and forth between Michelin Dynamic Classic in 20c and Continenta Grand Prix Classic in 25c. Both "tanwalls". The Continentals seemed to install fairly "tall" on my rims to the point that I couldn't remove the rear wheel without letting the air out of tire; that's how close the tire was to the back of the seat tube. It was too close to slide wheel forward in dropouts to remove. Other than that, they ride great. I used them on NY City roads in Mary's 5 Borough Bike Tour with no problems.

I also thought the GP was a tad 'tall' - and recalled back-in-the-day (early 90's) GP's seemed to run a tad tall compared to some other tires ... Michelin Super Comp HD ... or Vittoria Corsa Open CX (or whatever that tire was)

the 700x25 GP5000's currently on my Peloton seem barely wider than the 700x23 Super Comps I ran back-in-the-day

I bought a pair of the Cayuse Pass tires back when they were under the Compass label. They were on sale for 30% off, which is the only reason I could justify the purchase. I'm not in the camp that pays car tire prices for bike tires(I am still rolling on 15" Bridgestones from Costco)

In my experience riding them, they were comparable with Veloflex Master, Vittoria Corsa cx, GP4000, etc. They ride nice for their size, and get just as many flats as the others. I had to replace them at about 3,500 miles. Mostly road with some chipseal and a little gravel.

$150-170 cost of two tires( will buy you at least three tires that perform as well or better). Just my 2 cents

Interesting. On 17.5mm internal rims, my 25mm GP5000 cream wall tires measure 25mm. They aren't narrow or wide. And I can't say I have ever found them to be tall...but I really haven't thought about that before as it hasn't been an issue.

My Bianchi takes 25-26mm true size. 700Cx28 Contis have always worked on it. I just bought 5000s to replace my aging 2000s.

I use Challenge tires. They ride as close to the feel of a tubular as you can imagine.

They come in tan or black sidewall, as you prefer.

It so often depends upon what is on sale.

Lately, I’m using Vittoria Rubino Pro in 25, but I picked up new 25mm Mavic Yksions for $20/ea. at a swap meet.

Wow, I have a set of Conti 3000 whick I got from my tandem bud, and from 1984 a set of Conti super Sport 1000 in 27 x 1 ⅛. I like the 3000 better than the 2000, but while they have aged they do not wear - amazing! Much nicer ride from Challenge Strada Bianca, but my wife loves the 3000 on her 1997 Terry.

After reading through all this I went back and actually measured the frame clearances with the 20 mm (nominally) Wilbers (nice-looking tires but stiff sidewalls). Seatstays, 10 mm lateral, 9 mm radial; chainstays 9 mm lateral, 25 mm radial (frame has no chainstay bridge); fork, 9 mm lateral, 8 mm radial. Conclusion was I should try 28s! Test fit on the front with a 700c wheel fit with the Michelin, and it worked. Headed out to LBS and I chose the Vittoria Corsa Control Graphen 2.0 28 mm. Fit is very good!
