I'm looking for a recommendation

Hello all, I'm hoping to call on your expertise to help me narrow down my search for a vintage "go fast" bike. I'm currently the owner of a 1983 Schwinn Super Sport and am amazed by its light weight and speed, but believe the frame is bent. Thus, I search for a replacement. My particulars:

Lightweight steel
63ish cm ctt
130mm OLD (would like to use HG compatible stuff)
Can manage 28+mm tires without fenders
Not super-agressive geometry
Rack eyelets would be a plus

I'm not particular about this mystery bike's provenance, but would prefer something with an English threaded BB shell.

Thanks in advance!

Raleigh Super Course, International, or Competition of about your vintage? It's pretty easy to spread a 126mm OLD frame to 130.

I know you want ISO, but consider a Peugeot PKN-10. I would have kept mine if it had been one size (about 2cm) shorter in top tube and seat tube. Delightful and versatile frame!

If me, I’d try to find another 83, or even an 84 Supersport frame, and just transfer over the components. 84 Tempo frame would also work. Those frames were all basically the same.

Fuji made some very nice bicycles in larger sizes in the 80's.

My other recommendation... steer clear of crypto.

I have a 1985 Ross Signature 294s that’s a great rider. It doesn’t have rack eyelets, but does have fender eyelets. 28mm tires with fenders is easy. 2 sets of bottle mounts and DT shifter mounts.
I cold set it slightly to run 8 speed. Pretty easy stuff.
Another possibility if you are open to an AL frame is the Cannondale ST series touring bikes. No personal experience but many here sing their praises as lively all-rounders.

Not to discourage buying a new bike (we are enablers here, after all), but why do you think your current frame is bent? If you look up frame alignment on these forums, you should be able to verify one way or another fairly easily.

Go fast bikes have no rack eyelets. Vintage bikes with tire clearance you want have fender eyelets
The 86 Centurion Ironman has room for 28s.

Heh, because I'm lazy and that bike is currently living out in the country. Plus, I love seeing what you all think about this particular problem.

You can run 7 speed HG cassettes on a 126mm hub. Or alternatively run a 7 speed freewheel with HG style ramps and cutouts, on a 126mm freewheel hub.
If you insist on 130mm, you are ruling out a whole lot of good classic choices.

Damn, I just let a decent '83 Super Sport and an '84 Tempo 63cm frameset go. Paint wasn' the best on the SS and it had an '85 SS fork but they were straight. The guy that got them is a member here but doesn't come on often. If one of those would work I can get ahold of him and see if he'd let one go then put you in touch with him.

Yes, I am aware of the 126mm HG hubs that are out there. I've had a heck of a time finding any for my current setup, let alone whole wheelsets.

I really appreciate that! I'm just coming off of a bike purchase (I'm sure you all know how it goes), so this is really a mid-term goal, kind of a "what should i keep my eye out for" thing. Thanks again!

He's willing to let one of the Schwinns go if you're interested. My guess it would be the '83 Super Sport but I'll let you guys work that out. When you're ready let me know and I'll have him contact you through a PM on here.

I'd recommend a quality bike that you find locally at a good price that meets your criteria . . .
