Crash Damage
I went on a fairly routine group ride this Sunday. I'll post a motionbased link in a while if you are curious.
Anyways, I had a crash about 20 miles in going about 20 mph. I went down hard on my right side and ended up in the grassy drainage ditch. I had a bit of road rash on my right leg and a nasty cut on my left thumb, but otherwise ok. The bike seemed fine at first glance. I straightened out my left shifter and set off to catch the rest of the group. I rode about 30 more miles on the bike after the crash.
Well, I wanted to snap a few pictures of the damage to send to some friends, and I noticed something very disturbing. Have a look. I'll take it to my LBS tomorrow (closed on Monday). Do you think the frame is trashed or repairable?

It's a hole all the way through the outside of the left seatstay.
And yes, it's AL.

I wouldn't ride it, but I'm pretty cautious with that kind of thing. See what your shop / c-dale rep says. With crash replacement, maybe you can get a good deal on a new super six.

After I saw the hole this morning, I can't believe I made it 30 more miles on the frame like that. That could have been a very ugly end to what was already a pretty lousy ride.

You can't do a damn thing with AL. If you re-heat it, it will become angry, and uncooperative resulting in death.

Considering the small diameter of the seatstay, and then taking into the account the size of the puncture and how much of the circumference of the seatstay it just eliminated (AND the critical location), the frame is definitely screwed. Let us know what happens with the Cannondale crash replacement though.

Took the bike to my LBS over lunch. They said it's proboly trashed, but are apparently no longer a C'dale dealer, so I have to go to a not so local bike shop. Maybe I can get there after work today.

The frame is toast.
Wow. What an irresponsible thing to say. I really hope you're joking. ...doesn't sound like it.

Took it to Bethel Cycles in CT to have a look. I figure C'dale has some offices in Bethel, so they can pop over and look. I won't have an official answer on replacement cost until Thursday, but it seems that I will only get the same deal as the C'dale trade in program. The shop guy said he'd have a C'dale rep come over and have a look.
Since this was my first road bike, and I rode the hell out of it, I figure it's time for an upgrade anyways. I was told about $2200 for a System 6 frame with carbon crank, stem and fork. I was hoping for a bit better deal to be honest. I think a CAAD9 would be about $900 or so, but I think I am looking to trade up a bit.
If I get totally hosed on the crash replacement, or lack thereof, I may try to get my homeowner's insurance to cover it. I was not exactly planning on upgrading so soon.

Joking.
Please, guys, adjust the joke-o-meter.
I'm an Aussie so much of my humour floats right past most Americans.
(Like another dead body in the Mississippi.)

blacksquid, how do you like the Orca? Depending on the replacement deal I get from C'dale, I was looking at an Orca. What kind of rider are you? Race it at all?
Any opinions would be much appreciated.
