How tough is this chick??

"Team Lipton rider injured in collision with truck
By Nathan Carr

Photo ©: Emory Ball
Kim Geist, a 20-year-old Olympic hopeful on Team Lipton, is recovering at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest after a collision with a tractor-trailer early this week. The Emmaus native suffered a broken pelvis, broken ribs, two collapsed lungs and several fractured vertebrae in the incident, but sources say her doctors expect her to make a full recovery and she should return home sometime next week. No surgery will be necessary, although one of her lungs is still being inflated artificially.

According to an article in Friday's Morning Call, Geist was riding on PA Route 100 Tuesday morning when a truck driven by Lee Reichwein, 41, of Locustdale, made a right turn in front of her. Geist struck the side of the cab, then, according to a friend, she curled into a ball as she fell under the truck's rear wheels, which rolled over her. "

Tough, or lucky?

I really doubt she will be riding her bike in the next few months.

"although one of her lungs is still being inflated artificially"

They don't send people home with chest tubes, do they????

I always get a kick when a family member makes a comment like: "He'll make it ... he's a fighter". Uh, sometimes that has nothing to do with outcomes if the body is damaged enough.

Glad to hear that she survived.

That sucks.

For those of you that've been around she is (or at least was) a regular poster here, though I haven't seen anything from her for some time. Her handle is Velo.

She did some Junior track racing for the USCF with good results awhile back. I think she won a Stars/Stripes jersey in fact. I guess she's gotten into road racing.

Here's hoping for a full recovery.

Damn, I thought her name was familiar. Agreed on the full recovery.

Ouch

I suspect she is both very tough AND very lucky.

I hope that they send her home with a morphine drip. I know I wouldn't want to leave the hospital without one.

Wow, I know that XXX Athletico was down in early July because one of their new riders got hit by a car in her first race because she crossed the yellow line to avoid an accident.
Lipton and XXX were the two teams next to my tent during Naitonals. Am I next?

Hmm. Tough? Maybe. Lucky? I think she's pretty damn far from lucky on this one.

awww crap.

this has not been a great week or two for BF.
I've been watching Velo come along from a hopeful junior to a successful racer.

Heal Quickly Velo,

Marty

What a shame!
I ride those roads.
Rt 100 is infested with 1,000,000 square foot warehouses just north of the Trexlertown velodrome, with an amazing number of tractor trailers on Rt 100 near I-78. The local state bike route "L" was re-routed away from that Rt 100 and I-78 area, which is dangerous for cars, let alone bikes. I wonder where she was riding. Trexlertown Rt 100 seems safer since a new bypass has removed much of the traffic, and I sometimes ride on that "old" stretch of Rt 100.

I always find it very ironic that people think someone who has been in an accident is "lucky." If you were lucky you would never get into accidents in the first place!

Why do I get the feeling that artificially inflated lungs (as described in the news story regarding her medical treatment) would get this poor girl DQ'd from a UCI event six months hence?

Wow! Horrible news about the wreck and injuries, but very glad to hear the favorable prognosis. I remember reading some of her race accounts here on BF and hopefully she's able to get back at it with full strength.

Here's to a rapid and full recovery
