Stronglight 49d crankset chainline.

Hello Im brand new here but I was wondering if anybody knew how to get a 42mm chainline with a stronglight 49d crankset. Ive heard somewhere in between 110-115. would it change if i used a campy bottom bracket?

I used a Stronglight 113mm spindle with Stronglight cups with a Stronglight model 93 crankset and a single chainring to get a 42 mm chainline on a succession of fixed-gears. Getting it to work with other spindles can be a bit tricky. Currently I'm running a 113mm Phil Wood BB with French adapter rings and it works but is sub-par - I had to flip the BB around and run it with the long side on the left to get it to work. I think a 107-108 in those would work better.

The Campy will be ISO taper, if memory serves, while I think the Japanese JIS taper is closer to the old French Stronglight/T.A. pattern - but I bet someone with a copy of Sutherland's handy will chime in soon!

The stock spindle was 118mm, I believe, and would've been intended for a 43.5mm chainline (120mm rear spacing, 5s freewheel). I believe rustystrings61 is correct regarding the taper. So I think you would need a slightly longer spindle if using a Campagnolo spindle to achieve the intended (43.5mm chainline). I would think 115-116 if using a Campagnolo spindle would get you pretty close to 42mm. As it happens I have a complete 49d bottom bracket (English cups) in my parts drawer if you are in need of one. Drop an email.

Very timely post and glad someone alerted me to it as I asked this question to some friends this week. I have a model 93 with a track ring that I plan to use on a 50s frame in single speed mode (110mm reset to 120mm) with a standard fixed/fixed 120mm hub. I have a 113mm Shimano cartridge BB in my drawer that I was going to try. Am I reading your post correctly that the 113mm JIS taper should be about right?

The 49D sets I have opened up which came OEM usually were fitted with the 120 spindle.

Another option for a single plateau drive is the T.A. nr. 314 spindle.

My answer to the question, "Will 113 mm JIS be about right with a single chainring on a mod. 93?" is "I think so, but could not swear to it." In my case I ran a standard model 93 crank that I shaved down the inside chainring ledge and countersunk the c'ring bolt holes a touch to allow its use on first an old Trek and later a new Mercian, both with non-indented right chainstays. I got pretty much dead-on 42 mm chainline with that setup, and it worked beautifully with my beloved Gitane TdF fixed-conversion until I got fed up with the fixed-cup working itself loose and fitted the Phil.
