Looks like it might use the same tool that takes off external bearing bottom brackets?

ah yeah, I think you're right. maybe I'm old fashioned but I don't like the fact that it still requires a different tool (assuming you don't have an external bb.)

That Phil lockring is made of aluminum. It is discounted to $28. Nothing says "overpriced junk" like the Phil logo.

I'm curious what you don't like about Phil products?

Everyone seems to have trouble with them. Their products in general, don't seem to be fit for the purpose for which they are sold - AKA warranty of merchantability.

Either they just break or they never seem to actually work except without workarounds and endless trial and error to get them just right. When they do work they don't seem to provide any value beyond bling.

I'm all for high-end gear and am the first to remind people that looks matter but for a company which claims to be an engineering company I just find their products to be gimmicky.

As always, I'm open to correction and always try to understand reasonable objections, even if I don't agree.

To be fair, Phil does state that the aluminum lockring is for indoor, track use only.

Thanks for the response. I've never owned a Phil product so I have no first hand experience. I've never read anything negative in the past, so your bold "Junk" claim made me really curious.

I never tried them personally but I thought Phil hubs were considered top shelf.

The Phil lockring is aluminum; the multiple engagement points minimize the risk of damage when tightening or loosening the lockring. It appears that a standard, readily available external bottom bracket tool would work to install and remove the lockring.

That said, I've never felt the need for an aluminum lockring. Steel is much more durable, and only trivially heavier. Of course, you do need a Campagnolo-thread lockring for Phil hubs, rather than ISO (unless they've changed recently).

Agreed!

If only Philwood spent the R&D efforts on redesigning out the stepped tool interface on their steel lockring instead.

I discussed it with some other folks and we concluded that Phil's aluminum lockring and Lightweight's carbon bottle cages are tied for the most pointless thing ever.

I've never had any problems with any of the Phil Wood products I've owned and used, and there have been a lot. Come to think of it, I don't even think I know a single person who's broken or had trouble with any Phil stuff.

You know all you need to do is flip the lockring over if you're not using a 12t cog, right?

That thing may function incredibly well, I have no idea. But man, that is one ugly bike. To me, anyway.

I love everything about this. The Campag (that headset and seatpost especially), the wheels, the XTR pedals. So pretty.
