A dozen years ago there was a road race in a special part of rural Florida, the same place that made national news for Haleigh Cummings. The locals didn't appreciate cyclists in their area and basically pulled this stunt on a couple of course corners. A friend broke an arm.

Someone did that with nails the year i rode Gila. Middle of nowhere, suddenly a third of the pack had flat tires.
