Addiction 2023.2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My sister sent us pictures of crocuses and such blooming at The Ancestral Home. Made me a little homesick, but I'll be there in 3 weeks. There are some places where the daffodils aren't blown yet, but not many. Meanwhile, all the Prunus trees of various species and varieties are in the midst of blooming. And the yellow-green flowers of Oxalis are every damn where.

Yesterday was the monthly C&V ride, but I was the only one to show. I had fun, regardless - no friendly chatter, but I was also able to ride at my own pace, and I was pleased to note just what a great bike the Centurion Ironman I got back in 2021 is! It was a beautful day for it, temperature around 60, sunny, light breezes, few clouds. Still enough water and stuff on the road that I had to wash the bike after, but all in all a really nice morning on the bike.

I was expecting today to be the same, but Ma Nature fooled me! It was A LOT windier, and as a result, even though the average temp for the whole ride was only 2 degrees lower (55 vs 57) it felt MUCH colder. I even wore a warmer jersey and felt colder! Today the wind was out of the NW so the one segment heading North on Canada Rd was a slog. Still, way better than riding ITG.

When I got back and uploaded my ride, Strava told me I'd done 140 miles this week. That seemed like too much, so I looked at the Training Log, and there was a 7 mile "Evening Ride" on Thursday. That seemed strange. I didn't remember heading out again. So I looked at the ride, and I got a bunch of KOMS! Average speed 33 with a max of 66. Yep, I'd accidentally turned on the Garmin while putting the bike in the trunk! I deleted the ride, but for one brief shining moment, I'd gotten KOMs. That'll never happen again.

Unless I cheat.....

it was DECEPTIVELY windy; for the first half of my ride today i was looking forward to the tailwinds. they materialized for the third quarter, magnificently, but then somehow shifted and i had vicious headwinds and crosswinds for the last quarter.

this morning i set out for what i thought was going to be a 79 mile ride at 17.5 mph. made one wrong turn and it became a 83.5 mile ride, and either due to me sucking or the winds being very different than the last time i did it, at 16.5 mph.

home an hour later and an inexplicable 50% tireder than i thought, but some time off work this week led to my biggest mileage ever in a week, and momentary possession of the leaderboard!

time to take a few days off though.

For me, it was a tailwind early in the ride, but not as strong as the headwind later on the way back.

This is what I did 3 years ago today. Not sure why I rode less than an hour. It was after work and I rode from home since the Silver Comet trail was closed due to covid. It is an unusual route as well. It seems like I cut this short for some reason. It was a nice day, 66 and sunny so weather didn't factor into the short ride.

I've been wanting to ride with a friend for several months but we haven't been able to put it together since he quit our club and found another group. My Tuesday ride friend also missed him for months as they were pretty close for some years. After e-mails and phone calls we finally got the three of us together today for a short ride with a long coffee stop.

He even brought the saddle I've wanted to buy from him since mine started coming apart. Best Sunday ride in a long time.

Then I came home and watched Tour of Flanders.

An abundance of water is the norm in the Great state of Georgia Tell us of your cycling exploits this weekend. Was it an office park time trial or a Brown Squirrel adventure?

Went to the beach for lunch,. by car. Beautiful wind coming off the gulf, making for comfortable temps. Inland it remains in the mid 90s.

We're into two weeks of Easter vacation, so traffic should be minimal early mornings. I'll try to get out at, or just before first light and see how it goes. After yesterday's ride, I'm again looking at off road options. I went to Athens Ohio craigslist and found not a single bike for sale; then went to a bigger city. Same. Bob tells me all the used bikes got bought up during covid and the market hasn't recovered; he told me there are no used bikes anywhere. Sad!
