A nice lazy holiday 2 hr ride on the Palouse to Cascades trail today. Need a tad bit shorter stem on the 93 Trek 950 drop bar bike. Overall it is a great riding bike for this trail.

Not as much riding or as many miles this weekend as I had hoped for, but I did manage to squeeze in a favorite 18-mile jaunt this morning, complete with a moment to take a photo of the Forestry Commission’s new sign on Dixie Drive.

Took a short ride over to the county bike-share barn (a former stable for a mounted-police force), currently undergoing some deep-cleaning and upgrading, to help out a bit.

Today’s ride was about evaluating a saddle modification on an Ideale.
I call this ride “Do‘a Duo”. That is = ride around 2 of the local foothill mountains, Cougar and Squak. Just short of 30 mi.
My home adjoins this Park, just not at this location.
Up to the fire station at Lakemont
It’s Puget Sound so……..Starbucks abound, with folks hangin & enjoying the sun
Past the skateboard park -
Hand forged donuts
Alum: National Ski Patrol

Had a great ride on Saturday with a fellow member of the new DMV Folding Bikes group on FB! I biked from Bethesda to Arlington National Cemetery via CCT and the Memorial Bridge. We then traversed the Arlington Loop up to Ballston, where we stopped at a Starbucks for coffee. I then continued on the I-66/Custis Trail to Rosslyn where I took the Metro the rest of the way back. 30 miles total, and the NoVa trails are so damn beautiful. Lots of parks, flowering trees, and community gardens along the way.
Map of the route. Forget the part from Rosslyn back to Bethesda via WMATA Blue and Red Lines.
Circle at the end of the Memorial Bridge
Gravelly Point
Me somewhere past Shirlington
Bluemont Junction
My biking partner Dean at Bluemont Junction
Returning at Rosslyn
Another view of the eastbound Rosslyn platform

30 miles on Saturday wasn't enough, haha. I went for a fun vintage bike ride with my dad Labor Day morning! He came for the long weekend and was excited to explore the DC trails. My dad rode a blue 5-speed 1969 Schwinn Collegiate while I rode the trusty green 3-speed 1981 Huffy Touriste. We took the CCT to Georgetown, caught the Back to the Future DeLorean on the National Mall, and then continued back across the Memorial Bridge to Gravelly Point via the Mt. Vernon Trail. We then returned north to the Arlington Cemetery stop to take the subway back to Bethesda. 20 miles total.
The complete route
Bikes at Fletcher's Cove
WWII Memorial fountain
Back to the Future DeLorean on the Mall
My dad and his Collegiate
Me with the Touriste outside the DeLorean
My dad looking from the east at Gravelly Point
Me looking from the east at Gravelly Point

Huffy Touriste at Arlington Cemetery station

Today was the last day of summer vacation for my son, before he starts eighth grade tomorrow. We rode down to Mukilteo Beach for some fish and chips. We stopped and had a milkshake at the end of the Boeing Everett runway.
Just shy of forty miles. It was a nice end to a great summer.
New(& long overdue) ferry terminal at Mukilteo. Local folks will appreciate it.
One of the fire rescue rigs at Paine Field.
Watching Alaska airlines take off over the largest building in the world(according to some searching on the internet. Correct me if I'm wrong).

I really love riding fixed gear and I was quite fortunate to find that frameset in my size - it seems like most vintage track frames never get much bigger than 56 or 58cm.
Up close it's not anywhere close to perfect - it has quite a few dents*, gouges, and scratches in the powdercoat, but I bought it from the builder who raced it a bunch on the velodrome. For that reason alone I'll keep the finish original as long as I can
*quick anecdote about the dark mark in the middle of the DS chainstay: Apparently the builder installed a new BB right before a race but hadn't noticed that the new spindle was shorter than the one they had been running before. Upon finding out that the crank arm was fouling the chainstay, the frame was slightly modified in the field so that they could still participate

I had a day off from work and was in a particularly lazy mood today. Yet I felt I needed to do something. So I spent a few hours thinking up an activity that would be useful, but wouldn't evolve into actual work.
So I decided to check if my L'Eroica bike was ready for L'Eroica, which will I'll be off to in a couple of weeks. It had performed flawlessly at Eroica Limburg last weekend, so I was pretty confident this was a good plan.
And it was.
A short ride confirmed it was still in excellent shape, and needs nothing more than a damp cloth for dust removal. All that remained was to take a few pictures for this thread:

non-fixie I did not realize the Macho Man Randy Savage was an American export. I’m not sure how I feel about that.
Took the VO Rando on some gravel riding today. Gorgeous day out but like abshipp , the legs were beyond al dente today, so kind of slow pace. Cville Bikeapalooza participants might recognize the locale.
End of first gravel segment, Dick Woods Rd.
I know I post a lot of pics next to fences, but I couldn’t resist this one. I turned around and came back for the photo.

Today’s ride was supposed to be a 40 mile evaluation of a newly modified saddle.
But life delays and Friday afternoon traffic turned it into so much more - for you. Some May Valley and Coalfield highlights turned into a picture-esque but lowly 15 miles. Oh well, the weekend portends more miles.
Obvious supply line disruptions affecting local business.
A sign of the Season - Fall beckons locally
Runnin wid da stallions But I promised the bustling Coalfield (unincorporated)
Fine dining at Jay Berry’s
But the ‘food truck/coffee shack/gas station food mart’ side of town has major appeal
And the local feed grain and recycler has bags of manure at $3.50.
Have a good day!

Just a little 14.7 mile jaunt today. I wasn’t quick enough to get pix of the two hawks I saw posing near the road, but I did get some photos of people setting up today’s event in scenic downtown Hodges, SC. Should be a fun for the whole family thing.

Continuing the Great Cycle Challenge. Started out with a group of 5 but had to turn back and get my home ready for mother's bday BBQ.

Yesterday I did a bucket-list ride: Boston, MA, to Portland, ME, 200k+ with the New England Randonneurs. Left Woburn, MA, at 5 am (!) and arrived in Portland a bit before 3 pm. Great weather, beautiful route, a great way to cap the summer riding season. I only took one photo: Nubble Point Lighthouse at our second control:
I spent the night in Portland and then caught the Amtrak back to Boston. The bike accommodations are definitely improving!

Been off the bike for a week, grandkids from New Orleans sheltering here. Thought I was heading for a brisk (15.5-16 mph average) 30 mile ride. But, once I got on the canal, there was a detour, I walked around the construction and got back on the path, but found a lot of storm debris not cleaned, as that section isn't really open... (and from the sign, I committed a felony).
Last of the summer flowers
The Potomac River, looking upstream, toward my destination
I had to walk around this (closure was South of me)
Oh-oh, none of those signs when I entered about five miles South....Bet they were up on the road.

I need to move!! You guys all live in such beautiful areas with lots to see even on a short ride.
I did manage to turn in a good performance on today’s Tour de Suburbia. Just a 17 miler wif beautiful sorta cloudy skies and a stiff SW breeze that made some sections a little fast and others a bit of chore.
My fabulous’90 Proto and bedazzled helmet
Trying out some new toys. I was having trouble with my almost 6yo Motorola and completely fed up with Verizon. So I treated myself to a new iPhone 11. And slashed my bill by going to consumer cellular
I don’t really take advantage of all a phone has to offer so I opted for the 11 rather than the latest greatest 12 and put the savings toward a 6 watch! I still haven’t figured everything out just yet but I LOVE IT!
Being able to check my HR without keeping a oxipulse meter around is nice. Although it is only two leads I like that I can take a ekg when I want, especially if I feel an Afib episode start. One weird quirk is that when you’re setting up your watch to scan for Afib if you select that you’ve been diagnosed with Afib it won’t let you set it up. Odd.
One big downside, at least for me, is I don’t seem to be able to down load Sportactive from the Apple store. I downloaded Strava and I am figuring out how to use but I don’t like that doesn’t talk to me while riding and won’t post my rude stats on a pic.
