CHROME touch up paint, has anyone ever used ?
Hi,
Wondering id anyone has had any luck with CHROME touch up paint.
Not silver...........but chrome.
There are a few areas on my chrome fork I would like to " touch up""
Googled it it mixed reviews.
As always..........appreciate any and all help.
This forum has been, and is, the BEST !!! Has help me immensely !!!!!!!!

There are a few different brands of chrome paint so need to be more specific. I don't know about all of them but most will not look like actual chrome at all. There are some types of coatings that do look like actual chrome but from what I found that they are basically professional applications only and need special equipment to apply. Cheaper and less toxic than actual chrome but not quite as durable. There may also be a chrome powder coating finish available but I haven't seen anything in the flesh with this. I'm not the ultimate expert on this so there may be something in a rattle can out there that looks like chrome, I just haven't found it yet.

Yet to see a rattle can paint that looks like chrome.
I cleaned up light freckles on 50 y.o. forks first with 0000 steel wool wet with light oil, then auto paint rubbing compound, then Simichrome.
None of the freckles had pushed through the Peugeot's plating.

Testors may have some chrome-like model paint you could try. I haven't used it before, but may be another option to rattle-can.

I don't know if chrome nail polish would work or not, but if it was something to explore, I would go to a large nail salon to see if it was available. The place my wife gets her nails done has a wall of polishes and you would have a chance to see it with your own eyes before purchasing.

Some brands are getting better at making a color that looks like chrome, shiny brass, gold, and other metal colors that have been hard to make look natural side by side.
I still just don't worry about it though. A flake or bloom of rust showing through is just added "character". And not worth my time to try and make perfect again.

On my restorations I often find rusted chrome fork ends. First off check to see if the chrome has a clear sprayed over it. If so remove the Enamel or lacquer with paint remover or Acetone, Then rub with aluminum foil followed by coating with navel jelly to remove the rust. Sometimes when there is crusty rust it works to use a razor blade or one of the throw away box cutters to gently scrape off the rust. Do this by laying the blade down flat on the fork . this will knock off the rust without scraping the chrome. At this point the chrome will look pretty good. Clean again with Acetone to remain any residue then carefully mask off the paint and spray the chrome with Rustoleum Automotive clear. When doing this to a fork I hold it by the steer tube while spraying, being careful to not put the paint on too heavily and constantly rotating the fork to keep the paint from running. After this procedure the pitted areas in the chrome will still be visible but it will look great from 3 ft. away and the rust should not come back any time soon.
