Just picked up my first Gitane. It came with an interesting combination of Simplex and Campagnolo parts. Unfortunately this frame is huge.

You may have a mix of parts, but they are all high quality, especially these retrofriction shifters: arguably the best non-ratcheting friction shifters ever made. And there are a few tall boys around here... I start at 60cm c-t-c.

Hard to tell exactly without more photos, but looks like an upgraded TdF from the early 70’s.

Surly an upgraded TdF model. Some really nice parts though . If any body is interested in the frame, I'll let it go for just shipping charges. Or better yet, a trade for something French of the same era in the 54-56 size.

If only you needed a 50cm, I have a small Super Course in need of a home. But I already have a 62cm TdF that looks like the twin of yours. It is an amazing ride.

Nice find! Good collection of parts, too!

What size is the frame and what French things are you looking for in a potential trade?

Here's my mid/early 70's Tour de France. Got it as a frame + some parts and was a fun exercise in wheel building, preservation, and sourcing correct parts. Has such an easy-going way about the way it rides but alas it's just a bit short for me, other wise it'd be perfect!

Absolutely amazing Gitane Criterium! I had that exact model back in 1984. Loved it SO MUCH, and rode it thousands of miles before it was stolen from right outside my college dorm room. I have many fond memories of that bike, and I greatly appreciate you posting that photo!

Do any Gitane experts know if this might be a Gitane? The serial is stamped under the bottom bracket like most Gitanes I've seen. Also some numbers on the dropouts. Dropouts are forged Simplex. Frame about 1,900g and fork 820g. Probably designed for 27s. I'm running 700x35 r and 700x40 front. With these, the Ht and st angles measure 71.5 and 73.5 respectively. Let me know if you want specific photos. It has been repainted and is spaced 126 and the fork and bottom bracket are both French.

Any insights appreciated!

If this has not already been claimed, I'd sure like it. This frame is a '70-'71, right in my personal sweet spot.

Cheers!

If you’re running a larger tire in the front than in the rear, it’s definitely not a Gitane.

It’s a sweet little bike, though!

French but not a Gitane

"....proche mais pas de cigare"

Definitely French, definitely not a Gitane... Why?

While Gitane used those style of Bocoma lugs on their lower priced models during the late 60's to early 70's, they only used that type of swagging on the seat stay tops in the mid to late 60's. The chrome plated stamped steel fork crowns appeared on some lower priced models around the end of the bike boom - 1973-74.

Gitane like most French manufacturers only used forged dropouts and fork ends on their better quality models back then. A Gitane with forged dropouts would have had better quality lugs and fork crown. Also, from the mid 60's until maybe the 1980's Gitane didn't use brazed on derailleur cable guides on the top of the BB.

It's probably not a full Reynolds 531 frame but the 3 main tubes may be. A frame with a 531 seat tube would (or should) take a 26.4mm seat post.

I've seen those lugs and seat stay treatment on other brands but since this thread is about Gitanes....

All that said, it's probably a decent riding bike so enjoy it. Just consider it a "bâtard"...

And BTW, disregard any numbers stamped into the frame. They are either not traceable or meaningless or both.

Thank you for the insights and I guess it's not a Gitane after all! I posted about this mystery on its own thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...onversion.html

Here are the 1970 TDF and 1967 Deluxe Mixte I recently finished for the Bike Exchange. They both sold quickly to collectors, the TDF for the give away price of $350 and the Mixte for $300.
