It's an upgrade and rides good, but now the TT is slightly sloping.
This isn't something I'd considered, but at the moment, the 22" Circuit is buried behind 4 other bikes in the garage, so it will have to wait till after breakfast.

EDIT: Both measure 14 13/16" from the tip of the dropout to the lower bearing seat.

Sacrilege no, great plan to get what you want. Late 80s Circuit is so worth it!

@genejockey you know I'm not the right guy to talk you into anything but "buy as many bikes as it takes to build the one you want". Looking forward to seeing the new build

Yeah. Now I have 3 frames and 2 forks to make one bike! My wife thinks I'm nuts, though this might be anything new.

I contacted Dale Saso, who said, "Sure, bring it on by," so I guess I'll strip the 22" bike this weekend!

Ha... So funny... Stud, it's a Franken Bike not a "Restoration". You know this! The bike looks fantastic and it appears to have that presence that insures a very nice ride. Get that Goose Neck Quil Stem and ride on...

80mm-220mm-30°

Also note that as we age we get less flexible in handle bar positioning. 2cm difference would be intolerable for me personally...

Ah, but if I recreate an authentic 1989 Circuit, it's NOT a Franken Bike!

The Nitto Technomic stems might give you 2mm more height. Another possibility is a new replacement fork for the 23" frame.. Soma might have a threaded fork that would fit.

Please don't put an angled stem on it!

If you need something taller, and you're having the fork cut and threaded, just cut the steerer long, and use spacers between the headset cup and the locknut to get a bit of extra height!

I have a fork. I just need it cut and threaded, and I found a framebuilder who can do it.

The 1989 Circuit came with the Sante headset, which has a two piece cover, which is one of those things I want to keep. So, no extra spacers.

Hey genejockey - compliments on how clean your Shimano Sante component group is ! Those were 7 speed Uniglide indexed rear shifting, yes? Just curious about the state of tune on the RD indexing and if you are running a Sante 7 speed freewheel or a 7 speed Uniglide cassette hub?

Also, the Sante cranks with the smooth chainring bolt heads are one of my favorites. I bought a set of those Sante chainring bolt sets from eBay and went for a trick look on some Dura Ace 7410 cranks I was running. I loved the look but unfortunately I lost one of the bolts on a ride and came home with only 4 out of 5. Ever since then I do better with applying thick grease to my chainring bolts and torque-ing them down good.

Thanks! I got the bike from someone who had gotten it 10 years before, and then not ridden it much, after getting if from another guy who'd bought it 10 years before, and then not ridden it much. There might have been yet another guy who'd bought it 10 years before, and then not ridden it much. In any case, there's not 33 years of wear on any of it. There's a scratch or two on the cranks, but otherwise it's in great shape!

Yes, it's got 7 speed indexed shifting, which is beautifully crisp. It's got the full Sante kit, so that includes the 7 speed Ultraglide freehub, with the smaller diameter threaded end that takes a Dura Ace smallest cog. It came with 13-23 cassette, but I swapped out the 21 and 23 for 22 and 26, since I'm not as young as I used to be. Oh, and it's got the original 52/42 Biopace chainrings!

I bought it because I was fascinate by both the frame itself (Candyapple red, Columbus main tubes, with chrome Tange Aero stays and fork) and the groupset (Shimano's Sante). It came with all the original parts, except for ONE of the black rubber nubs that go into the pivot bolts on the single-pivot brakes. I normally ride larger frames, 57-59cm, so it took a long seatpost and a 130mm stem to make it fit. Mostly.

The thing is, the bars are about 2 m lower than any of my other bikes, and I found that after long rides on it, especially if I do much riding in the drops, I get some lower back pain.

SO, I found a 23" (58cm) frame on Ebay. Same year, same color, etc. But this time, in my size. No fork, though, and obviously the fork from the 22" frame wouldn't fit. SO, I found a 24" 1988 Circuit frame and fork. That frame is a bit rough. Lots of rust spots on the top tube, etc. BUT the chrome fork will clean up nicely!

Here's my plan: Get the fork from the 24" cut down and threaded to fit the 23" frame, then swap all the components from the 22" frame onto the 23", recreating a completely authentic, but not original, 1989 Circuit in my size. And a really nice 22" frame.
Why bother cutting the 24” frame fork at all? Just use a 1” spacer and be done with it, and as a bonus you get an extra inch of stem adjustment. I never cut a fork to the exact HS size because it could cause problems replacing the HS later and frankly it’s too much of pain just to take 3/4 of inch off.

This fork has been like this since ‘90 with no problems. A stem with a little rise helps too

Before anyone else says, "Why cut the steerer, just run a lot of spacers!", here's the Sante headset. On the right is the upper part, with the two-piece cover in place. It's a low stack height headset, and doesn't really work with a lot of spacers.

Yea same here. Both forks obviously accommodate 27”/700c wheels but perhaps the crown is taller?

I wouldn’t bother with it. I like Ritchey Logic HSs, they don’t cost too much and are very smooth and durable. Leave that Sante in the frame it is in to save the next owner some headaches.

But then it wouldn't be an authentic 1989 Schwinn Circuit.
