Airport and trailers (bike) how is it and bob trailers
hi
im looking for purchasing a trailer for bike tourring
Bob trailer seems very good but i read that in ariports they are causing problems since they cannot fold and are very big
ANyone has airport experience with a yak trailer (positive or neg)
Maybe explain how it works.

tow fork in backwards, inside the load area, and zip tie the rear wheel to the deck and it wont be as big..
put it and your gear in a big duffel bag..
haven't bought it yet? look at extrawheel ?

I have not chosent yet .
I read that in some airport it is not possible to travel with it (even unmounted).
One other person said that it was too big(evne unmounted to even be in the oversized luggage category.
what kind of experience with which airplain cie did you have ?

flew with bob on japan air long ago.
bike goes in bike box, trailer goes in DIY cardboard box. check airline regs for oversize limits first.
remove the yoke (2 hex bolts) else it takes up too much space. that leaves the deck area of the trailer free. put some padding on the two front tabs and on the dropouts at the back.
stow the yoke in the drybag and fill with as much gear as will fit and still be within the weight limit per piece. bob wheel and fender on top of (or in) the dry bag...tape it shut.
you should be able to spread all your gear betwixt the two boxes so only need to check two pieces. one pannier can be used as carry-on.

the drysack is the waterproof bag that comes with the trailer. it fits inside the trailer to hold your gear. trailer will NOT fit inside the bag. load whatever will fit in the bag (and still be under the weight limit). the bag sits in the trailer like normal. must remove the yoke...if you just turn it back, the bag won't fit.
the trailer with loaded dry bag goes in your cardboard box #2 . get a big cardboard refrigerator box and cut to size.
assume you'll have two saddlebags. load one with gear, should fit inside the bike frame if you remove the water bottle cages. the second one is your carry-on.

I have a BOB but have never flown with it. That said, I'm pretty sure you could get it into a box sized for free carriage on the airline. Just custom-make a box that fits within the 62" size limit (L+W+H = 62").
I have traveled with a Burley trailer several times (Burley Solo child trailer) and was able to get it into a checkable box, but it took a lot of disassembly and I custom-made the box. I think a Burley cargo trailer would probably pack down to a small-enough size easily.

I have an Extrawheel trailer and have flown with it a couple of times. Both with my Surly Long Haul Trucker. First time I went the two boxes route but the second time I got the bike and trailer into the one box.

We use an extra wheel when family touring. My wife pulls our younger daughter, I pull an extra wheel loaded with extra luggage.
1. Extra wheel is less expensive.
2. It will allow you to carry 2x20L+ Ortlieb panniers. A Bob can carry larger items.
3. Extra wheel fits inside a flight bag, with the bike. No extra luggage. A Bob isn't flight friendly.
4. Extra wheel can be pulled on a single track. Or riding close to the edge of the road. Better than a 2-wheel alternative. Even a Bob might be tricky.
5. Extra wheel is very easy to remove from the bike. When you've reached your campsite, 5 seconds and your bike is free.
6. Extra wheel weighs a couple of kilos.

Burley flatbed or cargo trailers pack down fairly compactly, but sounds like you want a single-wheel trailer.
