Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advise on a S-Works

I had Soloist on the car rack and got rear ended (bummer) last week. I should be getting the insurance money sometime this week. I hoping its about 4k.

Anyway, I walked into an LBS near my job just to take a look. They had a leftover 2008 S-Works SL. Full Dura-Ace, even the crank was Dura-Ace. Handle bars and stem were Ritchey carbon. Its a 49cm, which is my size. Retail price was $5500, but they were selling it to me for $3300.

Yeah, I know its a 2 year old bike, but for the price, I thought it was a good deal. I could always use the insurance money and put some extra cash and get something else.

Just wanted to get some opinions as to what you think about this.

Have you considered replacing it with another Cervelo? S1? S2?

The 2008 SL frame is basically an "expert" model now (not quite, but close), so consider that for price comparisons.

I'm not interested in another S1. Online, I've seen '09 RS Framesets for about $2100. Maybe I can use some parts from the S1; shifters, brakes, derailluers, and build up the rest.

i vote for that. give the still good undamaged components another home on a new frame. probably come out ahead too money wise.

Unlikely that he will get to keep anything the insurance company usually takes everything.

Who said anything about a lower end Madone. For $3500 you can get an 09 Madone 5.5. I'm not saying it's better than an 08 S-Works but it's certainly not a 4 Series Madone if that's what you were referring to.

If you have parts available then get the new SL3 frameset or module and build it up with those parts. The SL3 a 2 generation newer frame.

+1 for the Madones.....either a Series 5 or 6 in Project One - pick and choose your components and paint

I got my insurance check. Its $3800 and the insurance company kept the bike. I went to my LBS and they are willing to knock off $300 off the price of a frameset. They expect shipment of these frames in mid-November. Not sure if the frame is worth $2600.

No offense intended. I just find them a rather ordinary, uninspired ride. I think it is the lower vertical compliance that just seems to dampen feel and handling.

SL3 all the way. How much do you think you can dedicate to the build? Maybe there is a silver lining to the accident, though the soloist is a great bike.

GVHBikes has a 6700 groupo for about $950. I can get Easton EA90 aero wheels for about $500. Then there's the handlebars, stem, saddle, tires, etc. I hoping to keep it under 2k

you should have loaded the totaled bike up with some old ****ty 105 and kept the components, i really don't think they'd notice the difference after they took it
